ABOUT
Concept:
Girls Like Me is a female reproductive wellness guide promoting self-empowerment and offering crucial insights into reproductive and sexual health. It addresses the gap in the New
Zealand secondary school curriculum, encouraging young women to embrace their
womanhood and advocate for lifelong well-being, thus enhancing knowledge of
reproductive health.
Challenge:
A significant lack of basic anatomical knowledge in women is evident, with 44% unable to
locate the vagina on a medical diagram and 60% unable to identify the vulva from a recent
study. This knowledge gap raises concerns about women's ability to advocate for their
healthcare needs, highlighting the importance of consistent sexual and reproductive
education in schools. In New Zealand, the sexual education curriculum spans from year one
to year ten, but its implementation varies across schools, often due to teacher confidence
and knowledge gaps. Addressing these issues and providing comprehensive, relatable
female reproductive wellness and sexual education are crucial for improving reproductive
health outcomes.
Design Solution:
To tackle the substantial knowledge gap among young girls resulting from inconsistent
implementation of female reproductive and sexual health education, Girls Like Me was
developed as a guide to female reproductive wellness. This guide promotes self-
empowerment and offers essential insights into reproductive and sexual health, encouraging
young women to embrace their womanhood and advocate for lifelong well-being. The guide
includes a resource pack featuring an instructional brochure and vibrant, positive
reinforcement stickers designed for use in secondary schools. The Girls Like Me website also
provides a platform to explore the mission, purchase the resource pack, and access the free
Ebook.
Design Impact:
Girls Like Me could have a profound impact in the education sector, filling a market gap for a
resource that is both relatable and personal. Growing up in a religious yet loving household
with strict rules limited my freedom and hindered discussions on reproductive and sexual
health, leaving gaps in my sexual education. Through self-education, I've filled these gaps
and aim to share this knowledge with others like me. Girls Like Me addresses a personal
void from my youth, promising ongoing impact. It is designed as a lasting resource,
empowering young girls to advocate for their lifelong well-being, thus addressing a critical,
underserved need in sexual education with a significant impact.
Other key Features:
Girls Like Me: A Guide to Reproductive Wellness is a resource pack designed for secondary
schools to bridge the gap in delivering comprehensive and consistent female reproductive
wellness and sexual health education. This engaging and relatable resource pack aims to
captivate female students' interest. To ensure accessibility, an eBook version is available for
schools unable to receive the physical pack. This eBook allows teachers and students easy
access to empowering information, enabling young girls to learn how to advocate for their
female reproductive wellness throughout their lives.
