ABOUT

Concept

University College Birmingham is a specialist university in Birmingham, England, awarded full university status in 2012. With a strong focus on vocational and industry-led disciplines including hospitality, culinary arts, business, marketing, sports science, and early years education, the institution has a distinctly practical and student-focused identity.

The brief for the 2020–2021 Annual Report was to move away from a traditional corporate tone and instead reflect the youthful energy, ambition, and momentum of its student community. The publication needed to feel dynamic, engaging, and contemporary while still maintaining clarity and professionalism.

⸻

Execution

The design approach centred on creating a strong sense of movement and energy through layout and typographic rhythm.

Large, expressive pull-out quotes were introduced as key visual anchors throughout the report, giving voice to students while breaking up dense informational content. These were paired with contemporary colour gradients developed from UCB’s primary colour palette, adding depth and vibrancy without straying from brand consistency.

Asymmetrical page structures were used to avoid rigid grid layouts, creating a more fluid reading experience. This allowed content to feel active and progressive, echoing the pace and diversity of student life. Typography and spacing were carefully balanced to ensure accessibility remained intact despite the more experimental visual direction.

⸻

Results

The final report delivered a refreshed visual identity for UCB’s annual reporting, aligning the publication more closely with the institution’s modern, student-led ethos. The design successfully elevated traditionally static financial and institutional content into a more engaging and visually compelling experience, improving readability and narrative flow while reinforcing brand personality.
