Red Bee Media put a call out to directors to pitch interpretations of the initial creative brief for the BBC. In keeping with this Ident series format, a graphic circle had to be formed by live action moving imagery. The creative brief asked for a ring of fairies in a forest. I knew that the nature of these fairies would be the key to winning the commission, so I set about designing creatures hoping to produce a completely new take on this traditional concept. I wanted them to be so subtle and illusive that they were credible - something that may be thought of on a casual view as a trick of the light but on closer inspection were beautiful and enchanting. I produced a series of photographic looking images created in photoshop using a combination of natural elements that looked completely at home in the forest. These were eventually brought to life using performance and dance, elaborate costume and filmed forest elements, blended with macro insect footage and light in a 2D compositing post- production process.
