About me

My name is Martin Yates and I am a recent graduate of Loughborough University in Industrial Design. As my course progressed I became especially interested in interaction and graphic design, having completed a specialised module in my final year and receiving my highest mark of 84%. This module and ongoing research into the areas of UI, branding, web and interaction has made me extremely passionate and I wish to progress my knowledge in this sector. I recently carried out a short placement at Microsoft Game Studios, developing branding, packaging and graphics for a new product launch. As a completely new brand, detailed user research and persona creation was needed, whilst keeping constant awareness of the existing Microsoft brand and values. For a more detailed look at the work I have produced please see linked portfolio.I feel I would fit in well with the design qualities described in the vacancy, having undertaken similar design styles and attitudes in producing my personal website and the various work carried out on my course. However I also believe that I could offer a different approach to your design process using my industrial design background, complimenting the methods of other colleagues. As part of my design course I also spent a year in industry, working for a design consultancy in Cambridge. Most of the projects completed in this time were short-timescale, rapidly evolving design work. I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of managing multiple tasks simultaneously, such as design development, client meetings, collaborating with colleagues and keeping the managing directorsâ€(TM) coffee mugs full! During my placement I was awarded a bonus for my design contributions to various projects - the first placement student to do so. I hope to work in a similarly challenging environment, in which the work is hard and unpredictable, but consequently the rewards are hugely satisfying for both client and company.I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my suitability for the role of UI developer.
