ABOUT

I was approached by a friend of mine, Melanie Martinez, with a proposition of doing a children's book together. Melanie had an idea for a character and a basic story line and needed an illustrator to visualise it and develop it further.
The character is called Arthur, who in his youth fell victim to a magic trick: he was sawn in half during a circus performance, but was never put back together.

I started working in my sketchbook and first developed the older version of Arthur, but than Melanie suggested that maybe Arthur should still be a young boy. I found the idea of the legs separated from the body particularly amusing. I thought it would be quite funny in fact if we used the older version of Arthur, but in contrast have the legs representing the young, mischievous, boyish alter-ego of the character, often playing pranks on their owner.

Arthur's Underwater Adventure is an illustration based on an idea I had for a potential story involving the character. It is drawn with fineliners and than some parts of the drawing were painted with watercolour and others coloured digitally in Adobe Photoshop.
