ABOUT

Crete, known as 'Megalónisos' (the 'Great Island') is the largest of the Greek islands at the southernmost point in Europe, it's almost a country in itself. These images were taken in the central and western regions of Rethymno and Chania, I hope they reflect the essence of this wonderful place.
I visited large towns, but I gravitated towards the mountains and smaller villages, to meet ordinary people away from the hustle and bustle of the more commercial environments. Driving through the countryside it wasn't long before I came across the roadside commemorative shrines which are dotted throughout the island, in fact I became a little transfixed by them and often stopped to take a photograph of the many different types. In the foothills I found smaller towns, full of life, and quieter mountain villages where locals sipped Raki in a small cafes. Crete's landscape has a vast presence, its mountains providing marvellous vistas, layers of landscape into the distance and far beyond. Of course all roads eventually lead back down to the Mediterranean Sea, blue and serine in the spring sunshine.
Amongst these photographs you'll see fishing nets drying in the sun; slippers resting against a wall; old posters in town streets; the colours and textures of the land; a skull of a dead goat hanging on a fence, as if to commemorate its life; a canopy of olive trees in dappled light, as well as other details which all add to the richness that gives Crete its unique identity.
