ABOUT
Ben Johnson is an artist known for his paintings based on architectural spaces and his large-scale intricately detailed cityscapes. His work is included in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Ben was kind enough to let me spend a day at his London studio photographing him at work. He works closely with an assistant, sometimes several, going about his painstaking work. It's a relaxed environment and on the day I was there we had pasta for lunch sat around a full-size table tennis table, followed by a quick game, which is a daily ritual.
I'm always drawn to details, the small things that I feel make a visual story more pleasing. Johnson's baby powder, aprons caked with layers of paint and wheelie chairs covered with coloured finger prints are three such examples.
