Nottingham Sheriffs were a recreational Ice Hockey Club based at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham. The founder/owner wanted to quickly establish the team to become local rivals for the Nottingham Outlaws IHC, so even before the identity was finalised, I had a slogan that I could run with that was ready to go... 'Outlaws... There's a new Sheriff in town'!
Designing for sport is a real passion of mine, so this was a project I really got stuck in to and really enjoyed working on.
First of all I created a number of design options and presented them as fully realised logos mocked up on to a jersey. They were drawn to the ones that used shields and crests that had some historical context. By adding the shield and overlapping hockey sticks it gave the logo an heraldic feel. This was in-keeping with the legends of Sheriffs and Outlaws... a perfect mix of American sports and British folklore.
Finally, after deciding on the logo, they commissioned me to create the look and feel of the whole club's collateral. I designed the uniforms, the equipment, including helmets and sticks, advertising and other apparel.
By the end of the project I felt I’d achieved the ultimate goal of helping the Sheriffs punch well above their weight. They may well have been just a recreational club, but by applying the right design principles to the design and branding, they looked as professional as the Nottingham Panthers.
