ABOUT
My entry for the poster exhibition of GDFS-Graphic Design Festival Scotland. "A showcase and celebration of contemporary poster design from around the world".
_Title: “Not to Blame”
I saw the competition as a chance to express our inner feelings as Greeks. The title “Not to blame” represents
the way a greek individual is feeling nowadays, relatively to crisis and to the bad reputation of Greece.
“I am not the one to blame for this mess!”
_Concept: Greece is related with meanings such as ancient world, history, alphabet, sculpturing, architecture, geometry,
mathematics, philosophy. I designed a poster that shows all these values through the perspective of a destroyed history. The main
character of the poster (=the Greeks) is the statue of Artemis that is related with notions like nature, food, birth, the importance of life and
the first steps of a civilization.
“In Greek mythology, Artemis was the goddess of the hunt, the moon and childbirth, being associated with wild animals and woodland.”
[wikipedia]
All these meanings are being expressed through a dark and confused point of view (opened head). The statue indicates that the only thing that we are thinking
is the word “freedom”, which is written inside the head. The main character is confused and has 2 faces .
Another important element of the poster, is the typography, which is strong but also discreet. The words embrase the main character but they are also notifying
the importance of their meaning. The other elements are more subtractive but all together they represent our civilization’s values (geometry, mathematics,
architecture, science, nature.) The circles represent the planets and the meaning of astrology.
The main look and feel of the poster is based on a dark, old and weird atmosphere, that hides a whole culture inside and wants to be reborn.
_Typography: The typography is modern and industrial to indicate the “reconstruction” that our country needs and at the same time the new technological trends
of our century.
_Color Palette:
Dark tones of gray and black are used to show the difficult years we are living as country and neon bright colors to symbolize the future we are dreaming
of having.
