ABOUT

For our final project we were able to create anything we desired about a topic we felt strongly about, I decided to design a book about plastic surgery and the pro's and cons. In this post I’ve included a link for the PDF of my book, as you can see there are blank pages which I had purposely when I sent off for it to be printed. Originally there was only meant to be 2 blank, but 4 came out blank which I wasn’t too worried about as it meant I could add more personal touches to those pages. I bought a reflective mirror type card from hobby craft and added two pieces to one of the pages, I had also bought brass borders from Etsy which I added to each side of the card to give it a more antique look. After a lot of debate, I choose to use this card rather than actual mirror, firstly because the card was thin so it was easy to glue to the page but also I liked the distorted effect it had. I didn’t want someone to look at an actual mirror and to then start judging their looks, I wanted them to barely be able to see their reflection so that they wouldn’t be focused on how they look, to think about how they feel INSIDE. The page after that, I added 4 mini envelopes that I also bought from etsy, I thought they were really cute and sophisticated, and within each envelope was a piece of card which I added some text on for example ‘love yourself’, ‘you ARE beautiful’ etc. I also included ‘love yourself’ on the page as it suggests what I was trying to do with those to pages and I feel it was a finishing touch. As I had another two blank pages left, I included some of the polaroid card I made and just cut out peoples faces from magazines to add behind them. On the page after I had bought a necklace from ebay which was originally on a silver chain but I changed it to string to make it look more old fashion and have a rustic look. On the potion bottle it says ‘mirror, mirror on the wall’ which I thought was so charming and matched the name of my book. There was also an apple and small mirror on the necklace which was to do with sleeping beauty but I felt it would compliment my book so well and was just another personal touch. I felt these 4 pages made whoever was reading it, feel like they could interact with my book, the mini envelopes, mirror and necklace are all things that can be touched and felt which makes this book different to any other book I have seen. It’s almost lets say a 3D book. All these extra touches and pieces really completed my book and made it become something I never thought it would look like. It took me some time to come up with the name for my book, I felt calling it ‘surgery’ or along those lines would be so typical and boring, I actually hadn’t even purchased the necklace at this point to give me that idea, it just sort of came to my head and just seemed perfect. I feel the entire book is of a professional and high quality and I am quite overwhelmed how it turned out, a lot of hard work went into it and paid off in my opinion. I stuck with the same 2-3 fonts through out the book so that it all flowed, there was the page for ‘the children's epidemic’ and that whole page was made to look quite childish with the Disney images etc so each page had its own theme lets say. Over all I am so happy with the outcome of this book, it’s the best project I have ever made and I am glad I chose the topic I did for my FMP.
