I’m not going to dwell on the history of typography, there is plenty of that out there to be getting on with but one thing that hasn’t changed is the way we digest the written word, other than the advancements in technology. Be it on phone, in books or on websites, one thing has remained constant and that is a designer has made conscious decisions as to how this will be finally presented. Typography involves at it’s most basic font styles that will bring the written word to life and in this way altering the way we perceive information.
My personal favourite is the use of typography on what were known as album covers, now replaced in the main by CDs.
Alex Steinweiss of Columbia Records 1938 is said to have invented the concept of album covers and cover art. His style of artwork and use of typography remains original to this day and is still regarded as icon of genre.
