I was approached by the author of this historical fiction to create a cover illustration and design that encompassed different stages of the story in the book.

We took a closer look at the chapters and identified four elements to work with: the protagonists, a landscape with mountains and rivers, a palette of blue and red, as well as a star chart. The latter two embodied an ancient visual language and cosmology shared by modern-day North Korea and South Korea. The elements would subsequently be used as the opening illustration of the respective act in the novel (pictured on the right here).

I was able to deliver the full design along with the layout of interior pages and incorporate notes from revision sessions within the course of 2 months. The book is now being used to advocate for the rights of LGBTQI+ groups as well as North Korean refugees across South Korea.
