The sky's the limit for RPM

Published by

The London-based (and Wokingham-born) independent marketing agency RPM, has joined forced with BSkyB's Sky Academy to design the new Sky Academy Careers Lab. The Careers Lab follows the success of the Sky Academy Skills Studio, which launched back in 2012 and provides children aged 8-16 with access to scaled down versions of green screen studios and edit suites. The Careers Lab will work towards the same goal; inspiring young people to consider possible future careers in the media, technology or business industries, providing them with the practical skills they'll need to get ahead in such highly competitive industries.

Students who take part in the Sky Academy Careers Lab will get a unique, hands-on experience at Sky, learning the ropes and experiencing exactly what life working at Sky is like. They will also get the chance to interview one of the broadcasters senior leaders about their own personal experiences in the industry, and will work alongside genuine Sky staff on a practical challenge, which will match them to potential careers. The Careers Lab experience is expected to work with around 100 young people every week, and is an initiative that blends the real-world approach of work experience with the fun and safety of a school trip.

The experience will also be supported by a bespoke app

The experience will  be supported by a bespoke app, also created by RPM. The app will guide each student throughout their day at Sky, and will unlock content on an interactive wall installation that can be saved to their own personal timeline, which they can view from their own devices, meaning they can continue their Career Lab experience from home. The app will guide each team of students through various interactive challenges that are based on real working briefs. Students will be given the required resources and information, but will then have to make the tough decisions themselves. This means calculating budgets, reacting to new information coming in live and making quick, important decisions on the spot. All experiences that will help them build a set of invaluable skills for their working lives.

Dom Robertson, Managing Director at RPM said they have been “Working with the Sky Academy Skills Studios team for four years now,” and were “Thrilled to take on this new challenge to design Sky Academy Careers Lab.” He calls it “An exciting and important offering, which sees them truly walk the talk and bridge the gap between the Sky Academy Skills Studios experience and work placement opportunities.” Bella Vuillermoz of Sky Academy adds that the project is just a small part of their ambition to “Create opportunities for 1 million young people by 2020.” The idea is to “Help young people prepare themselves for the world of work by developing their skills and interests,” and she feels that the “Sky Academy Career Lab will be the perfect platform from which to do this.”
