The Week in Tech

Apple iPhone 6S images leaked?

Days after Apple accidentally leaked images of their new iPods, images of the tech giant's next iPhone (the iPhone 6s) have hit the internet. The photos cite a “Proven” Apple source, and show that the new phone will bear more than a passing resemblance to the current iPhone 6. This was always going to be the case though, especially given how popular the current phone has been amongst the tech community and consumers in general.

The phone seems identical in size to the current iPhone 6, but changes could be in store for a Plus model. The interior mounting structure has been changed to fit a new logic board, and the details laid out match up with details of the phone's internal components already known. The new layout does debunk one rumour, however, namely that the phone will have a dual-lens camera. The new shell has the same holes for lens, microphone, and flash as the current model. Speakers, connectors, and microphone on the new phone, are also exactly the same.

The “Original” Playstation by Nintendo

*

For those of you unfamiliar with the history behind Sony's protracted arrival on the gaming scene in the mid 90's, recent leaked images and a video (above) showing a prototype Playstation with a slot for Nintendo SNES cartridges and familiar Nintendo branding, might have come as something of a minor shock. Either that or you assumed the images were photoshopped. The truth, however, is that the console in question was very close to becoming a reality in the early nineties, when Sony developed a system for Nintendo that played both SNES carts and CD-ROM games. However, Nintendo spurned Sony in a big way at the CES expo in 1991, when it announced it was working with Phillips behind Sony's back on a console that would wind up being the ill-fated Phillips CD-i. Fast forward 4 years and Sony tells Nintendo where to put it by announcing their own, standalone Playstation console, and the rest (as they say) is history.

A Reddit user has posted images of a prototype Sony/Nintendo Playstation console from 1991

The story remained the stuff of speculation until recently, when a Reddit user posted images of the prototype Sony/Nintendo Playstation console. When asked about the photos (which seem pretty legit to me), he said “My dad worked for a company, apparently one of the guys he used to work with, I think his name was Olaf, used to work at Nintendo and when my dad's company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of junk he was supposed to throw out. I've not had a chance to boot her up, I don't have a power cable at the moment, but it seems like it's a pretty common DC cable. I'll have to get one and see how it goes.” So what do you guys think? Is this really a lost gaming relic? Or an ambitious hoax?

Could a giant robot duel between the US and Japan be on the cards?

The North American robotics company MegaBots (subtle right?) has officially challenged the Japanese company Suidobashi Heavy Industries to a real-life giant robot battle. The challenge has yet to be accepted, but if it is, it would see the 15-foot-tall “MegaBot Mark 2” mech take on Suidobashi's “Kurata” in glorious, mech-on-mech combat. The Mark 2 is equipped with guns that can fire three-pound paint cannonballs at more than 120 miles per hour. It currently moves on caterpillar treads, but the team is a designing a walking version. The Kurata, meanwhile, is a 5,000kg mech suit that sports two arms and four wheeled legs that allows it to travel speeds up to 10 km. The diesel engine-powered mech is equipped with two 6,000 BB per second gatling guns, and stands at 15 ft.

The video (above) simply states (rather audaciously): “You have a giant robot, we have a giant robot. We have a duty to the science fiction lovers of this world to fight them to the death.” I think you'll all agree that's a pretty reasonable statement? MegaBot have set the fight’s date in June 2016, giving time for both teams to make the necessary modifications for the fight. Who are you putting your money on? I'm backing the Japanese, because if there's one country that knows it's way around a robot, it's Japan.

When Tinder met Netflix: A match made in heaven?

The recent surge in mobile dating apps has made meeting potential partners more accessible than ever before. As research suggests, however, the nature of the beast (let's be honest here, it's all in the profile picture) leads to more one-night stands and casual encounters than it does genuine, meaningful relationships. So finding someone to simply spend quality time with at home is still proving difficult. The Netfling app is here to change that by bringing together the worlds of dating and binge-watching.

Devised by the SuperHeroes innovation unit Super Powered, Netfling works by gathering information on most-watched TV shows and films and displaying other users that are potential matches. And with binge watching TV series together now a key element of modern relationships, finding a significant other based on your favourite shows could help to make the dating game feel a little more cozy and less intimidating for couch potatoes. Ola Syse, creative lead at Super Powered, said: “We’re constantly trying to improve the services and products we love. The data, tech and groundwork is there. We just add a bit of passion.”
