LG take a Quantum leap

LG has taken another step in the 4K wars with their new “Quantum Dot” TV, which they are expected to debut at CES 2015. The new QD-equipped set is said to offer a wider colour palette and improved saturation than conventional LCD TVs. Sony is already using QD technology in it's high-end 4K models, but LG's offering is expected to undercut Sony on price. The technology uses microscopic nano-crystals, which show a different colour based on their size. These crystals are laid in a film over existing 4K UHD LCD TV panels, dramatically improving the range and depth of available colours.

The TV is set to be more affordable than OLED models, which are still beyond the price range of the vast majority of buyers. The new TV will be available in 55 inch and 65 inch versions, and will be unveiled at CES in Las Vegas next month. According to In-kyu Lee, senior vice president and head of the TV and monitor division at LG, “Quantum dot’s vibrant and vivid colour reproduction capabilities brings LG’s LCD TVs to the next level when it comes to picture quality.”

Nissan catch drivers red thumbed

In a new campaign to stop drivers from texting behind the wheel, Nissan has teamed up with TBWA\Chiat\Day and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine to remind US citizens of the risks behind texting and driving. Statistics show that mobile phones are involved in 1.6 million car crashes every year, crashes that claim 6,000 lives. To help quell these figures, Nissan has been promoting “Red Thumb Day,” an initiative inspired by EVB advertising ECD Steve Babcock's “Red Thumb Reminder.” Jeremy Tucker, vice president of marketing at Nissan North America, said that “Together with Adam Levine, Nissan encourages drivers to put the phone down and get where they are going safely.”

The message was shared by Levine during a broadcast of NBC's “The Voice”. Levine, who is a judge on the show, distributed Red Thumb Reminder thumb bands to the studio audience, and told viewers that the next 24 hours should be declared “Red Thumb Day.” He urged drivers to put down their phones when they were behind the wheel, not just on Red Thumb Day, but every day. Bands will also be available from all local US Nissan dealerships, and the campaign will be shared on social media via the #RedThumb hashtag.

Blackberry unveil the new classic

*

Blackberry launched their new Blackberry Classic yesterday in an effort to merge the company's past, present and future. The handset is technically a follow-up to their Bold 9900 device, and includes a classic Blackberry physical keyboard, an 8 megapixel camera and a 3.5-inch, 720x720 touchscreen. Blackberry CEO John Chen hopes the “No-nonsense” device will appeal to old-school Blackberry fans, referring to them as “The genesis” of the Classic design. He hopes that young people in particular, who have never owned a Blackberry handset before, will see it as a genuinely refreshing alternative to more conventional smartphones. Chen said “I invite people who haven't used Blackberrys before to try it," as he thinks they'll be surprised by it.
