Identity theft. Is Apple Pay the answer?

Published by

As technology continues to be a growing part of our lives, we are so quick to register so much information into our smartphones and tablet without reading the small print or even reviews for that matter. We are constantly wary of identity theft. Is Apple Pay the answer?

With the launch of Apple Pay in the UK in July how many are sure of its’ benefits, drawbacks and most importantly its’ security? The use of a fingerprint passcode (which has been available since Apple’s 5S model) certainly tightens security somewhat. Despite being more secure than most providers due to its’ “walled garden” approach, Apple technology is by no means infallible or immune to security attacks. With Pay also available on the newly launched Apple Watch, there will be plenty of scope for interference.

The benefits of Apple Pay too, are numerous for the consumer. The slimming down of our actual wallets, and the transference to our “digital wallets” is a phenomenon that has been occurring for several years. This coupled with anytime, on the go, instant payments is convenience on a level the consumer has not had before.

Not too long ago we spoke with a cross section of Women in Digital and asked them what they felt would be the biggest trend in the digital industry this year. The majority response was wearables and Amanda Neylon went as far as to tell us why digital and technology was so important to charities such as MacMillan Cancer Support.  Wearable with Apple Pay open up whole new avenues of fundraising opportunities for charities; instead of dropping £1 into a collection box what if you could instantly drop money into a virtual collection box with a flick of your wrist? The options are exciting, as wearables could provide a simpler way not only to pay, but also to collect data to market products and identify consumer bases. All of this, however must be mooted in conversation around data security.

But as far as security goes Nathan Bostock, CEO at Santander UK said: “We want to offer our customers more choice and control in managing their money anytime, anywhere. Our innovative 1|2|3 products already offer customers great value, with Apple Pay they will have convenience, and added safety and privacy too.”
