Credible rumours suggest that Windows 9 will launch in 2015

Published by

Windows 8 was far from the success story that Microsoft likely envisioned. By almost completely forgetting their roots and attempting to stitch together their desktop and mobile into some kind of bizarre Frankenstein's monster of an operating system they alienated those users who had become accustomed to the 'traditional' Windows. When we think of Windows, we think of the desktop, the start button and (above all else) the speed, not a glorified tablet homepage and a series of needlessly complicated and extravagant apps. If a series of recent rumours turn out to be true, however, it would appear Microsoft have finally listened to their fans and will be rolling out Windows 9 post-haste. That's the good news. The better news? It seems that Windows 9 will be returning users to the desktop!

Microsoft's latest OS Windows 9 is coming soon, do you think the start menu at the left bottom will make a come back?”

Up until now, Microsoft has yet to officially even mention Windows 9 by name, but yesterday an image appeared on Weibo, the firm's Chinese division, with the (translated) message “Microsoft's latest OS Windows 9 is coming soon, do you think the start menu at the left bottom will make a come back?” Of course it was quickly removed, but not before hundreds of savvy individuals saved it. Information received thus far through rumours and leaked documents has led the internet at large to believe that Windows 9 will be launched on PCs, laptops, tablets and Windows phones between “Q2-Q3 2015,” which puts the most likely launch date somewhere around April 2015. it's also thought that it will be officially announced to developers “On September 30th or shortly afterwards.”

Purported leaked Windows 9 Desktop Screen

Major reported changes in Windows 9 (currently codenamed “Threshold”) include the complete removal of the “Charms bar,” which (for the mac users and stoic Windows 7 users amongst us) is a menu that moves in from the right of the screen and acts in much the same way the start menu used to. In it's place is expected to be a return of the good old start bar (which the screenshot above would seemingly confirm) as well as significant changes to the “Metro UI” (the touch-screen interface), improved Windows activation and the addition “Cortana,” the personal assistant named after the character in Bungie's Halo games that essentially does for Microsoft what Siri does for Apple.

Windows 9 in expected to launch on PCs, laptops, tablets and Windows phones between “Q2-Q3 2015,” which puts the most likely launch date somewhere around April 2015

Obviously, as it hasn't been officially announced yet, we can't even begin to speculate on price, but considering the lukewarm reception to Windows 8 and the fact Apple offered their most recent version of OSX for free, offering consumers the OS for free would be a smart move. It's expected that Windows 9 will be 64-bit only and that it will continue to bring the Windows Phone, Windows RT and Xbox world's together and that all apps will be able to run on the desktop. Needless to say, Windows 9 definitely looks set to be a return to form.
