Top 50 global brands with social influence

Published by

The inaugural “Klout 50” was announced yesterday, ranking the top 50 global brands by their social influence and engagement. The list, ranked by Lithium Technologies, the software company that “Helps companies reinvent how they connect with their customers,” posits itself as the ultimate ranking of brands that are connecting with their audiences in an authentic way through digital platforms. These are brands the Lithium feel are reinventing the way audiences and brand connect with each other on social media, they are “Authentic, create compelling and meaningful content as well as engage with everyone.”

Amazon took the number 1 spot, closely followed by Microsoft and MTV, with brands given a rating out of 100 based on how active they are on social media platforms and how often their audiences share and interact with their digital content. Scores are compiled using Lithium's proprietary algorithms, which are determined by more than 400 signals from eight different social networks and data pulled from Wikipedia. The scores are also matched against the scores attained by those same brands in the Interbrand 2014 Best Global Brands report.

The Klout 50 salutes those brands that know social is part of their consumer’s everyday life and for effectively connecting and sharing experiences with them.” Katy Keim

Katy Keim, Lithium's CEO, said “The Klout 50 salutes those brands that know social is part of their consumer’s everyday life and for effectively connecting and sharing experiences with them.” She also added that it should provide a “Wake up call for the brands that are not on the list to understand that without social they lose.” The list also shows that brand value strength is not enough to succeed on social media, with only Microsoft, Google and McDonald's securing top 10 places on both the Interbrand and Klout lists and Apple claiming only the 28th spot on the Klout list, whereas it topped the Interbrand list. Of course, the opposite is also true, as MTV ranked at number 3 with Klout and 80 with Interbrand!
