It's only the beginning for mixed reality

Published by

Sol Rogers, founder of immersive production studio REWIND, believes mixed reality is still in its infancy and said we’ve only seen a glimpse of what’s possible in the future for the technology.

He took the audience at Creativepool’s Connect: London event through a spectrum of phases from real reality, the normal world we all know and live in, to virtual reality, where an entire new universe exists.

Rogers also spoke about the evolution of storytelling, explaining how it began around camp fires in previous times, evolved into pictorial stories being drawn on cave walls and has developed today into narratives that we can live out thanks to technology.

His session – Mixed reality is the future of humanity – built up to a suggestion that we’re about to see something that "will blow everyone's minds" in the next three to five years.

“It [mixed reality] humanises and connects us with technology like never before,” said Rogers.

“We are slowly edging our way towards it with mobile phones but at the moment are doing things in a clunky way.” Rogers referred to the success of breakout hit Pokemon Go and the upcoming Harry Potter Wizards Unite game as prime examples of how augmented reality has inspired imagination.

But as mixed reality and a merging of the digital and physical worlds become more prominent, the REWIND chief also warned of a divide between the have and have nots; those with access to these technologies and those without.

Hpowever, ultimately, mixed reality will bring us all closer together. “We all want to engage more and technology isn’t a boundary to that,” Rogers concluded. Watch his full presentation in the video below.
