New podcast series celebrates the everyday saints behind inspirational heroes

Published by

Conversations with fashion designer Henry Holland, artist George Shaw, director Susanna White and more besides are part of a brand new podcast interview series from Fabula London. “Saints of Somewhere” is a series that concerns inspirational newsmakers. The first season of the show, for example, features everyone from a death row lawyer and champion swimmer to a film director, fashion designer and artist. This rich mix of remarkable guests all reveal their personal heroes or ‘saints’ and inspirations in intimate and candid conversations, with each one talking frankly about their defining influences, make or break moments and what they learned along the way.

In Season One of Saints of Somewhere, we hear fashion designer Henry Holland talking about how he’s resisted a lot of the cynicism and hype that characterises certain parts of the fashion industry and he reveals who his heroes are and why. They include, Agyness Deyn; his childhood friend and fashion world accomplice, and Sir Paul Smith, as well as the now defunct British teen magazine, Smash Hits and his homeland; the North of England.

Then there is George Shaw, the artist and Turner Prize nominee whose two year residency as associate artist at the National Gallery has culminated in the “My Back to Nature” exhibition. George’s heroes include painter Francis Bacon, modernist writer James Joyce and English comedian and diarist Kenneth Williams.

British movie director Susanna White, who made Hollywood sit up and take notice with the balls out war drama Generation Kill, also talks about what it’s like being a female director in Hollywood when only 9% of Hollywood movies are made by women. She shares the people who have inspired her along the way. People like surrealist painter and photographer Eileen Agar; Hollywood portrait artist Don Bachardy; and Jane Campion, director of the Piano and Ann Pasternak Slater, who was Susanna’s English Tutor whilst at Oxford.

Others in series include Clive Stafford Smith, the death row lawyer and human rights activist, responsible for preventing hundreds of executions in the US, who talks candidly about what and who has inspired him the most, and Kim Chambers, the open water swimming champion and former ballerina who bravely returned to the water after a life changing accident. The Saints of Somewhere podcast is co-founded and curated by Fabula London with writer Kirsty Robinson, director Ringan Ledwidge, executive producer Andy Orrick and communications director Amie Witton Wallace. You can listen to all of the Saints of Somewhere podcasts via Soundcloud. Make sure you have a few hours free before you commit though, because they are genuinely that absorbing.

What people want is great editorial that is curated for cultural relevance. Saints of Somewhere is just that and we’re proud to be part of it” Luke Williamson, Creative Partner at Fabula London
