gpstudio commissions Kirsten Lavers for live art experiment

Published by

The London-based retail design agency gpstudio is providing passers-by and visitors to the office with a unique live art experience. Throughout September, artist Kirsten Lavers is creating and exhibiting work in the agency’s Arch Window gallery space on Great Suffolk Street. Kirsten will bring a special gpstudio feel to her work, which recreates concentric circles by hand, using pens and pencils from around the agency to create new pieces of art. She is working live on new pieces of art inspired by the design process at gpstudio on the following dates: 15th, 16th, 21st, 22nd, 26th and 27th September. On the days when she isn’t working in the agency window, Kirsten’s equipment and work will be left in place as it would be in a working studio. Her art will be exhibited in the window until 3rd October.

Specialising in what she calls “Drawn meditations,” Kirsten is experienced in creating live drawing around the theme of “Admitting the possibilities of error.” Her Live Drawing website contains examples of her art, which Kirsten describes as “Conceptual but ending with a finished artwork.” gpstudio commissioned Kirsten because her themes are well suited to the creative and design process. The project builds on Kirsten’s work with schools and in work places that highlights that making mistakes is part of learning and creativity.

Gregor Jackson, the Founding Partner of gpstudio, said: “We spotted and really liked Kirsten's work, and it's relationship with the core process of what we do as a design agency. Every design we create starts with a hand drawn sketch, holding a pen or pencil and putting a mark down on a piece of paper. Every design is literally touched by the human hand, and crafted over and over again, but the finished result is often one with an aim of untouched perfection. In our eyes, Kirsten's work reminds us of that human element.”

Kirsten Lavers herself, added: “I’m aiming to create a perfect circle by hand, copying and using other drawing materials from the studio. But because they’re hand drawn they can’t be perfect, the mistakes and errors hold the possibility for something positive.”
