Clerkenwell Design Week: A must-see shortlist

Published by

The Clerkenwell Design Week kicks off today (May 23) and runs until Thursday (25). Whilst there is far too much to cover in one article (we'll be running a more comprehensive trends piece at the end of the week), we thought we'd highlight 10 of the more interesting installations and exhibitions that we believe might be worthy of your time this year. If there's anything you think we missed, feel free to let us know in the comments below.

The Rainbow Tree by Harper Downie and Mapei

Brewhouse Yard, EC1V

*

This installation is a collaboration between Mapei and Harper Downie to showcase the versatility and range of Mapei products and their innovative, creative approach to design at any scale. Emphasising the colourful and vibrant range of finishes available, this interactive installation presents the Mapei palette of products in ways not seen before.

Keep by Jordan Söderberg Mills

Clerkenwell London, 155 Farringdon Road, EC1R 3AD

*

Multidisciplinary artist Jordan Söderberg Mills will create a perception-altering installation at Clerkenwell London, using light, colour and mirrored surfaces to create an optical illusion-filled immersive space. The installation forms part of the Design Undefined exhibition at Clerkenwell London, which looks at blurring design disciplines and last year presented Benjamin Hubert's made-to-measure, 3D-printed wheelchair.

The Playbox by Shape London and Fraher Architects

Spa Fields, Northampton Rd, EC1R 0DF

*

Designed by Shape London with Fraher Architects, The Playbox is a collection of 60x60cm moveable cabinets that enable users to rest and socialise. At the entrance to the CDW talks space at Spa Fields, The Playbox is inhabited by official tea partner Newby Teas, taking on the character of an intricate tea caddy and opening up to host the social activity of tea-drinking, with complimentary tea for talk attendees.

The Bolt: A Celebration of Craft, by Shinola and Giles Miller

St John’s Square, EC1V 4JJ

*

Shinola, who are heavily rooted in the preservation of craft, have collaborated with Giles Miller Studio to develop The Bolt—a cross-pond celebration of handcrafted skills, materials and products, themed around Shinola’s iconic lightning bolt motif and assembled in Miller’s signature style.

The Beacon by Perspex

Spa Fields, Northampton Road, EC1R 0DF

*

The Beacon, one of 2017’s most ambitious installations, supported by the Perspex brand, is inspired by the Tower of Babel. The 7.5m tall structure will feature an internal staircase encased in a typographical design which celebrates internationalism. Visitors will be able to climb up the internal staircase to a viewing platform over-looking a cross-section where the industrial meets historical Clerkenwell.

Order by Aldworth James & Bond

St John's Gate, EC1M 4DA

*

Creative build specialists Aldworth James & Bond are working with Corian to create “Order,” an installation at St John’s Gate for Clerkenwell Design Week 2017. Using the octagonal form inspired by the Cross of St John, the structure will celebrate the arch as a gateway to the design festival, and its design is firmly rooted in the rich history of Clerkenwell. The concept is inspired by Anthony Powell’s description of visiting the Charterhouse, another historical Clerkenwell building, alongside the geometric beauty of the four dimensional tesseract form.

Bleed by Lighting Design Studio, Popcorn and Red Deer

Bleeding Heart Yard, EC1N 8SJ

*

A sea of red LED strip lights will be suspended above Clerkenwell's Bleeding Heart Yard for Bleed. The installation responds to human interaction. When a visitor places their fingertip on the sensor, the lights react to their heartbeat – flashing on and off at the same rate.

A Collaborative Showpiece by British Ceramic Tiles

The London Hub, 26 Seward Street, EC1V 3PA

*

British Ceramic Tile pride themselves not only on being the No.1 Manufacturer of ceramic and glass tiles in the UK, but also on their obsessive focus on supporting their clients on their projects. For CDW 2017 brick artist and architect David Hughes has been commissioned to interpret this mind set of collaboration in a one off LEGO sculpture.

BuzziJungle by BuzziSpace

Spa Fields, Northampton Road, EC1R 0DF

*

Office furniture company BuzziSpace has enlisted the help of interior designer and architect Jonas Van Put to create an installation that challenges the traditional confines of the workplace. BuzziJungle is a multilevel structure that elevates meeting rooms and desk spaces above the ground. Visitors are encouraged to climb and interact with the tower, which is located in the Design Fields area.

Double Vision by Hakwood

Clerkenwell Close, EC1R

*

Hakwood, global leader in the design and manufacture of top quality wood flooring and wall tiles, returns to CDW and sponsors Double Vision, a 4-meter high structural installation of recursive patterns situated within the historic Clerkenwell Close. Inspired by the pattern possibilities of Hakwood’s wall tile range, Double Vision is a double panelled structure which aims to create an uplifting moment whilst walking the exhibition route. The piece celebrates pattern and form and its powers to brighten and energise.
