Bailey's Stardust

Published by

David Bailey was appointed as fashion photographer for British Vogue in 1960 where he shot over 800 pages of fashion editorial in just one year and along with Terence Donovan and Brain Duffy, captured the essence of the 'Swinging London' of the 60's. Together, they were the first real celebrity photographers, named by Norman Parkinson as "the Black Trinity. Now aged 76, a forthcoming exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, showcasing the highlights from Bailey's 50 year career as a pioneer of fashion photography.

Bailey has always been a massive character in fashion - an arrogant, potty-mouthed cockney, Bailey has never been a man to mince his words and yet he is well loved by the famous and the beautiful - men and women alike. During his long career Bailey has been unendingly entranced by Kate Moss and Jean Shrimpton, the latter of which he made a fashion icon in the 1960's.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph Bailey states:

"They’re the most peculiar women. I’ve never understood why everybody likes them so much. There are many more beautiful girls. But they’ve got this universal, democratic appeal. It’s like Dietrich and Garbo in movies, they’ve just got this thing that makes them stand out.”

A notorious womaniser, Bailey maintains that he has only ever had experiences with 'strong women' who would have never done anything they didn't want to do. On his working relationship with Jean Shrimpton , whom he had a passionate love affair with he states:

"I think we created each other. You can’t create a portrait by yourself. I always tell people it’s them taking the photograph, not me. For me it’s always about the people. I’ve never been interested in trees or mountains much."

Usually unfazed by celebrity, Bailey has refused to photograph Picasso twice as he doesn't believe you should meet your heroes.

Bailey's Stardust runs from 6th February to the 1st June at the National Portrait Gallery, get yourself along to immerse yourself amongst the creativity of this unruly national treasure.
