Spitalfields, these London pranksters are trolling your lunchbreak

Published by

In the latest “Go Fun Yourself” online film by Saatchi & Saatchi London for Toyota's Aygo, a group of four musical comedians make up humorous songs about passers by neat Spitalfields Market in East London. In the clip, which can be viewed below, Tom Livingston, Tom Houghton, Dylan Townley and Chris Turner paint a large X in the middle of a crowded street and hideout in a nearby Aygo, instructing those who are brave enough to step onto the bright orange X (the Aygo logo) to complete bizarre tasks (one man is asked to “Dance like a Terminator” and two builders are asked to share a sausage roll like Lady and the Tramp) through improvised song. The participants seem surprisingly game, and the ad takes an unexpected twist towards the end when one victim catches on and our comedians are hoist by their own petard.

The ad will be run on all Toyota's social platforms, with a shorter version running as pre-roll on Vevo. Toyota GB marketing communication specialist Jemma Shaw, said the spot has “Really brought life to the attitude of the Aygo in a fun and engaging way.” She adds that she feels the spot is “A great continuation of the Go Fun yourself campaign launched in July,” and that it will form part of their “Always-on social and digital content plan throughout the year.” Copywriting on the ad was handled by Gemma Phillips, with art direction by Mark Slack. The film itself was directed by Sam Wrench through Pulse Films and media planning and buying is by ZenithOptimedia. Toyota has already announced that there will be further pranks filmed for its social media channels towards the end of the year.

Toyota – X Marks The Spot

In related news, Toyota has seen a strong rise throughout China over the last month, with sales up by more than 13% in the first ten months of 2014 from last year. The Japanese manufacturer operates in the country through two joint ventures with China FAW Group and Guangahou Automobile Group, and has also seen a 27.1% rise in sales from October last year. Toyota are aiming to sell more than 1.1 million vehicles in China this year, which would see them surpass annual sales of 1 million in the country for the first time. Last year, the total amount of vehicles sold by Toyota in China was 917,500.

The sales boost in the region is even more impressive given recent economic out of China, which paints a picture of a slowing economy. The services sector grew at its slowest pace in nine months in October and the country's automobile marketing, which was once thriving, has also been slowing. According to the BBC, “The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers" (CAAM) has forecast that the country's market will expand by 8.3% this year, slowing from a near 14% rise in 2013.” Toyota has also been in hot water recently, with the company having to recall 1.75 million vehicles last month due to faulty brakes in the Crown Majesta, Noah and Voxy models produced between June 2007 and 2012.
