M&C Saatchi appoint general manager for Australian brand consultancy and help Virgin Holidays counter Three's 'Holiday Spam'

Published by

Virgin Holidays has responded to a spoof ad by the mobile operator, Three, who launched a campaign by Wieden + Kennedy earlier this month, which berated people who shared their holiday snaps on social media networks, based around the #holidayspam hashtag. The new ad, created by M&C Saatchi and Lida, who also recently launched a new campaign promoting the brand's Caribbean destinations, counters the Three ad by saying “Don't be sorry,” and actively encourages holiday makers to show off their vacation snaps. It's a clever response to what was (in all honesty) a bit of a low blow from Three.

The campaign promotes the hashtag #showoff, a direct response to the Three campaign's cynicism. Virgin Holiday's have said that the idea behind #showoff, which will also see space at London's Elephant and Castle tube station used to celebrate holiday shots, encourages people “not to hold back on celebrating what Three would call their ‘holiday spam’ on social media, and telling them ‘You look delicious’." By sharp contrast, Three's campaign apologised for the barrage of summer sun snaps by saying “We're sorry. Recently, you may have noticed a dramatic rise in sunsets appearing in your social media feed. Sorry for all the sunsets, the fancy cocktails, for plane wing after plane wing after plane wing.” On which side of the divide you sit no doubt depends on whether or not you're planning on going away this year yourself!

She joins M&C Saatchi after a stint as client services director at Frost Design, but has also been a key member of Air New Zealand's team, and has worked on new product development for Coca-Cola, and growth strategies for McDonald's.
