Busy Bees at the BBC this Christmas

Published by

The London-based media management company Red Bee Media, which was recently acquired by the Swedish communications firm Ericsson, has been incredibly busy this Christmas season, creating a set of ambitious idents for BBC One. The three idents each feature a “Magical forest,” which strives to represent the channels role as the “Heart of the nation,” with the forest posited as a gathering point for people from all over the country. The idents also reference BBC shows that have become synonymous with the Christmas period, such as Doctor Who and Strictly Come Dancing, as well as the BBC's relatively recent success story; The Great British Bake Off.

According to Red Bee, a consultancy that was founded by the BBC back in 2005, Christmas on the BBC gives the broadcaster a chance to “Connect with viewers who watch less frequently, but are watching with their families over Christmas, and to create a halo effect for the BBC as a whole.” They add that “Everyone has Christmas trees at Christmas, and everyone has strong opinions on how to decorate them,” so they “Created a magical forest filled with people decorating their trees in individual and diverse ways” to attempt to tap into that shared nostalgia.

Kerry Moss, head of marketing for BBC One, meanwhile, said that Red Bee's idents bring to life “The role BBC One plays in the nation's homes at Christmas,” by “Celebrating some of its most loved shows.”

The inclusion of Bake Off might come as a surprise to anyone who has been living under a rock (or without a TV license) for the past year, but it has been a genuine breakout hit for the BBC. Indeed, the series has trended on social media more than perhaps any other BBC show this year, with nearly one million Bake Off related tweets recorded throughout the 2014 series.

In related news, Red Bee Media also recently teamed up with the Polish duo Kijek/Adamski and production company Strange Beast to create a new animated spot for BBC Radio 4. The spot, for the “Radio 4 in Four” online campaign, combines stop-motion with 2D animation to create an ad that brings to mind the, simple, stylised look of old children's shows such as Trumpton and The Clangers. The clip broaches the kind of subjects generally covered by Radio 4, and raises the (quite valid) point that you might be better off spending four minutes expanding your mind listening to Radio 4 than “Boiling an egg” or “Changing a lightbulb.”
