Unlike advertising festivals, CICLOPE Festival focuses on the art of execution, rather than of the ideas. Whether it’s a TV commercial, a mobile app or an interactive installation, CICLOPE believes a the finished result is as important as the idea and celebrates it accordingly.
A conference and an award show merged for this year’s two-day event on November 3 & 4th in central Berlin. The conference offered talks and case studies, seminars and workshops, with guests including BBH Founder and advertising legend, Sir John Hegarty, Olly Chapman - Head of Television at AMV BBDO, and Chief Production Officer at 72andSunny, Tom Dunlap. Meanwhile the awards show (CICLOPE Awards) was a showcase and celebration of the very best of the year in different categories including Direction, 3D Animation, Visual Effects, Interactive Commercials and Original Music, among others. The conference event at CICLOPE 2016 was as carefully curated as ever. Martin De Thurah, the Danish director, painter, screenwriter and photographer, responsible for the multi-awarded Under Amour’s Rule Yourself and Hennessy’s The Man Who Couldn’t Slow Down shared his work and thoughts in a Q&A. Sebastian Schipper, Film Director of the award-winning VICTORIA, spoke about achieving the 'perfect balance', and Hollywood’s most respected trailer director, Mark Woollen, shared a portfolio of advertising campaigns, all of which consistently defied convention for some of the film industry’s most well known productions.
The Next Room, a curated platform in which a selection of production companies working in virtual reality and immersive technologies showcase their work and share their latest developments was also at the event once more. At 2015’s CICLOPE, the Next Room kicked off its first ever edition allowing marketers, agencies and production companies from all over the world to experience first-hand how VR is opening up new possibilities for the industry. This year, Here Be Dragons, Framestore, UNIT 9, The Mill and Psyop all exhibited their latest technologies. The exhibition programme included a half hour talk from Framestore’s CCO, Mike McGee, about what three years experimenting with virtual reality technologies had taught the company, as well as UNIT9’s presentation on the creative and UX insights from the last two years of developing multiuser virtual reality experiences and platforms.
During the awards ceremony event hosted in Berlin’s Kino International, more than 100 entries were rewarded and four won a 'Grand Prix' title: We’re The Superhumans (directed by Dougal Wilson, created by Blink and 4Creative, for Channel 4), Never Alone (directed by Tubby Brother, created by Stinkfilm and AMV BBDO London for Guinness), Lou Dalton (directed by Fred Rowson, created by Colonel Blimp for River Island) and Gosh (directed by Romain Gavras, created by Iconoclast Content for Jamie XX).
