WPP go big in China with new Shanghai HQ

Published by

WPP China is set to move 26 of its media and ad companies along with 3000 staff currently spread across 10 locations into a gigantic new building in Shanghai, which we will (for now) affectionately call “WPP Towers.” The JWT and Ogilvy & Mather owners struck a deal with the Nan Fung Group and the BM Group to lease 20 floors and 41,000 square metres of the enormous, imposing skyscraper at 399 Heng Feng Road, Shanghai, which is one of the largest office leases ever signed in the Chinese commercial capital!

The building is part of a three-stage redevelopment project in the Zhabei District scheduled to be completed in 2017, with relocations expected to begin by the end of this year. It's slated to include a shopping mall, six office towers, two boutique hotels and a luxury residential area. The office space housing the WPP Shanghai Campus is expected to gain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification, which will also be a huge boon for the famously environmentally conscious. holding company. Some of the companies slated to be relocated to the new space include GroupM, Ogilvy & Mather, Blue Hive, JWT and TNS. The deal further demonstrates WPP’s commitment to China, which is one of the company’s most important markets with WPP companies and its partners in China generating revenue of US$1.5 billion and employing 15,000 people.

WPP CEO Sir Martin Sorrell, said: “China is now WPP’s third largest market, and our commitment to China is deeper than ever. We are proud to support the development of the city of Shanghai and provide our people with the best facilities. One of WPP’s key objectives is horizontality (promoting co-operation across our group companies to improve outcomes for our clients) and bringing our people in Shanghai into this location is an important step towards this goal.”

Antony Leung, Group CEO of the Nan Fung Group, added: “The Nan Fung Group is delighted that WPP has chosen our project as their campus in East China. Their decision illustrates the increasing attractiveness of the Zhabei District to the international business sector. We regard WPP as a long term partner and we look forward to further working with them throughout the region. We will strive to provide to WPP, as well as other tenants excellent service. Taking this opportunity, on behalf of Nan Fung Group and B.M. Group, our joint venture partner, I would like to thank the officials in the Zhabei District for their strong support in making this project a success.”
