The Straight 8 Shootout is coming to London

Published by

Fresh from Cannes and by popular demand, the Straight 8 industry shootout is set to premier in London next week. The screening will be presented by APA in association with Creature of London and with support from and Kodak, Cinelab London, Elevenfiftyfive and Ourscreen. The Straight 8 industry shootout is a global industry battle (a company to company showdown if you will) to produce the best film on one super 8 cartridge, without editing or post-production.

Straight 8 @ Cannes Lions 2016

All of the films entered were screened for the very first time ever, even to their makers, at the Cannes Lions festival on Thursday June 23. With a healthy charity pot for the winning companies to donate to their own chosen charities, the big guns and the lesser known shops really went for it on a completely level playing field, as not only were the films anonymous, but they were all created under the same boundaries. With the doors open at an eye-scrunching 10am in sunny Cannes, the audience sank into the sumptuous seats of the mercifully dark and air-conditioned Cinema Les Arcades. Each film was made on a single cartridge of kodak super 8 film without any editing or post-production. With DCP projection and stereo soundtracks spread over the cinema's state-of-the-art 5.1 system, the Straight 8 industry shootout entries looked and sounded great.

There is never a creative brief set for Straight 8, the parameters are purely technical, yet bizarrely documentary, sex and relationships and answer phone messages seemed to be recurring themes. After the films played, the companies had 3 and a half minutes to cast their votes. The results were as follows:

**

1st Place: The Wagon for “Jamella” - A beautifully cringe-worthy story of a mans's post break up madness - Donating €3000 to the Small Steps Project.

**

2nd Place: Rock Hound for “Lucy” - A ticking bomb of a dark comedy with an shocking outcome - Donating €2000 to the British Heart Foundation.

**

3rd Place: Rothco for “Portrait of Shame” - A touching dark comedy documentary about a man whose dad had a skeleton in the closet in the form of a painting in the attic - Donating €1000 to Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.

**

Finally, the audience reaction vote (in true Cannes spirit given to the film inciting the loudest reaction after a film) went to Mad Cow Films for “Love is the Law” - A beautiful film about a man turning hate into love.
