Pizza Hut attempt to “Reinvent the Pizza”

Far from simply unveiling a couple of new flavours and a slight revamp of the old logo, Pizza Hut has been given a complete face-lift with ten new flavours of crust, five new ingredients, four new “Drizzles”, eleven new recipes and the new “Skinny Slice” pizzas. Not only that, but the Pizza Hut website has been given a revamp, with a digital online ordering experience, and there are new uniforms, boxes and even a new logo. It will mark, according to the American restaurant chain, “The biggest change that Pizza Hut and the pizza category has ever seen.” The changes will begin rolling out on the 19th of November.

The new menu, dubbed (rather grandly) “Flavour of Now,” will not only feature the new dishes, but also a host of Pizza Hut classics, which can be customised to diners specifications to create more than 2 billion potential flavour combinations! There are also 11 new “Explore Flavour” recipes for pizza affectionados to enjoy, which range from the fiery “7-Alarm Fire” pizza to the indulgent “Old Fashioned Meatbrawl.” Wiley Bates the third, Pizza Hut's global executive chef, says they know “Tastes and preference are evolving,” and that this menu has been designed to “Completely wow them.” He adds that “While some customers will be finding ways to bring flavours to the pizzas they've fallen in love with, others may be trying them for the first time. And, with so many options, there's definitely something for everyone.”

Perhaps the most notable change in the menu, however, will arrive in the form of the “Skinny Slice” pizzas, which are not only a healthier option, but are perfect for fans who prefer a more traditional pizza. The recipes used with the Skinny Slice pizzas will also carry fewer calories, with all five featuring 250 or less per slice. Rachel Huber, Pizza Hut's senior nutritionist is “Excited to be offering such a wide range of flavourful and delicious pizzas that also happen to have fewer calories than other pizzas.” She adds that “Nobody wants to feel like they're sacrificing flavour when they're counting calories,” and with the Skinny Slice Pizzas, they'll never need to.” Of course, Pizza Hut are not the first pizza chain to unveil “Healthy options,” but they might be the brand offering the most diverse range of skinny pizzas.

David Gibbs, Pizza Hut's CEO, said “ Pizza Hut has been defining what's possible with pizza since 1958,” and believes they are taking pizza to “Another level” with the new changes. He believes they are “Radically reinventing the pizza category with an (almost complete) menu transformation, a world-class digital ordering experience and an entirely new look and feel to our brand, all the way down to the uniforms.” He adds that they couldn't feel better about the new direction and the “Long-term changes” they will have on the business.

Of course, the changes will initially only be occurring stateside

Online ordering from the Pizza Hut website will be available in English and Spanish at home or on mobile, with a visual, digital ordering system making it quick and easy to choose from the vast new menu. The logo, meanwhile, which contemporises the iconic red hut design by cutting back the extra colours and leaving it as just red paint on white, will begin making its appearance on all branded items. There will also be a national US advertising campaign rolled out later this year, which will be handled by Interpublic's Deutsch, who claimed the account earlier this year from McGarryBowen without a review. Of course, the changes will initially only be occurring stateside, but if they prove successful, expect to be chowing down on a “Sweet Sriracha Dynamite” or a “Cherry Peppy Bombshell” sometime in the near future.
