Pick Me Up returns to Somerset House

Published by

The Pick Me Up Graphic Arts Festival has returned to Somerset House, with a fresh line-up of artists and designers poised to bring the very best in new illustration, graphic design and related disciplines to the idyllic grounds for the sixth year running. Vibrant, engaging and packed full of exciting things to see, do and buy, Pick Me Up 2015 features a host of different working processes and techniques ranging from traditional screen-printing to animation, risograph printing and paper craft.

Emerging and established talents alike have already set up interactive workspaces throughout the Embankment Galleries for the 12 days of the festival, which opened last Friday (April 23) and will run through until Monday the 4th of May. Each studio, collective or gallery represents a different form of graphic art, and offer visitors plenty of opportunities to engage with the artists and designers directly, watching work being made onsite, and even create their own work in a behind-the-scenes studio atmosphere. The original pieces produced throughout the festival, plus limited edition prints and accessories, will be available for purchase.

Located at the heart of the festival is Pick Me Up Platform, a programme of over 100 different talks and debates, demonstrations, DJs and games with top artists, designers and illustrators. Discussions here will explore not only current work and trends but will also address issues facing the graphic art community in years to come. Highlights include talks by Studio Myerscough and Graphic Thought Facility, artist Bob and Roberta Smith, Director of Curation at Vimeo, animation production company Golden Wolf, ELCAF festival, publishers Nobrow and Thames & Husdon, Occupy Design's Noel Douglas and various independent design magazines.

New to the festival this year is the FARM:shop, an urban farming and cooking school, who will be serving up some of London's freshest food, which is grown and then picked at an indoor farm in Dalston and sourced from some of London’s best growers. Their menu of fresh salads and hearty sandwiches is hand prepared each day using the best local ingredients. On Friday the 1st of may there will also be a premiere UK screening of “Made You Look,” a documentary about creativity in the digital age, which sets out to explore the landscape of the commercial art scene in the 21st century. Pick Me Up Selects, is a program that highlights international rising stars in the graphic arts world.

The event is open daily at the Embankment Galleries in the South Wing of the house from 10AM until 6PM on every day except Wednesdays and Thursdays, when it's open until 10PM. Day tickets are available on the door for £10, concessions are £8 and a festival pass is available for just £17.50.
