Phil Buehler appointed as EVP/Global Director of Strategic Planning at Porter Novelli

It was announced yesterday that Phil Buehler has been named as the new executive vice president/ global director of strategic planning at Porter Novelli. In this role he will be leading the public relations agency's award-winning analytical team, who are amongst the very best in the business. Buehler joins Porter Novelli from the New York-based integrated agency, Hudson Rouge, which he helped establish in 2011 under Team Detroit. He has been serving as chief strategy officer there ever since, helping to set the brand strategy for the re-launch of the Lincoln Motor Company through an innovative white-space analysis of the luxury goods market.

He will be reporting to Michael Ramah, senior partner and chief client officer, who believes that Buehler is “A rare combination of artist, mathematician and marketer,” which makes him “The ideal leader for the vision, growth and management” of the agency's strategic planning, analytics and research. Ramah says that the responsibilities required of Buehler require “Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills, the ability to challenge the status quo and drive innovative thinking and the capability to successfully implement game-changing strategic plans,” all requirements which he feels Buehler has the both the track record and talent for.

Before founding Hudson Rouge, Buehler worked as head of planning at OgilvyOne between the years of 2010 and 2011 and worked as chief market scientist at Havas before that from 2007 onwards. He has also served as director of account planning at McGarryBowen, executive vice president, director of strategic planning & analytics at Wunderman, and spent four years as senior vice president/director of brand strategy at Y&R Brand Asset Consulting. Buehler, who is also an author, runner, and established photographer, says he has “Long admired Porter Novelli's position at the forefront of research in PR,” and he is “Thrilled to help develop the next generation of tools, techniques and strategists."

He believes that its his artistic interests that keep him ahead of the curve in digital and social media, interests that spawned a PDN and Foreword review award-winning photo book last year in the shape “Woody Guthrie's Wardy Forty: Greystone Park State Hospital Revisited,” a book of never-before-published letters and historical photographs from the time the famous folk singer spent at the hospital. He is also known as one of the pioneers of ethnographic research in advertising, is one of the original architects of Y&R's Brand Asset Valuator study, and is a prolific speaker, who has presented at AdTech, AppNation and the 140 Character Conferences, among numerous others.
