LG usher in the future with new Ultra HD 4K OLED TVs

Published by

The South Korean electronics firm LG recently announced its first Ultra HD 4K OLED TV, which is due to hit shelves in the US. The cutting-edge, market leading TV is available in 65-inch and 77-inch classes and offers a picture that combines the intense detail of 4K Ultra HD and the enhanced contrast and colour depth provided by OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens. Both models are currently on display at the 2014 CEDIA Expo, which is taking place this week in Denver, Colorado.

These displays utilise LG's WRGB (white red green blue) OLED panels, in which every pixel is made up of four sub-pixels, meaning there are around 33 million sub-pixels working to reproduce the most lifelike colour possible. There is also no backlight required with an OLED display, which means that immeasurable black levels can be reached, resulting in an infinite contrast ratio. It's also one of the thinnest displays on the market at only 4.5mm (the depth of a few credit cards) and features a subtle curved screen, which (due to the frame-less and bezel-less edge, means the picture stretched almost completely from edge-to-edge.

Tim Alessi, director of new product development at LG USA, believes the new TV is “A technological achievement that will set a new standard for the way consumers think of picture quality." He adds that "OLED on its own has already been hailed as the best screen technology on the market” and by “ Combining the stunning capabilities of this technology with the higher resolution of Ultra HD” he feels LG have stumbled upon a “True game-changer,” that will “Reshape the industry and leave consumers simply amazed."

As is expected of most modern LG TVs, these new models also come equipped with Smart TV functionality in the form of the LG Smart TV+ webOS

As well as being able to display native 4K content, whether it's streamed over the Internet or playing from a USB or HDMI source, the new models will also include LG's Tru-4K Engine Pro, which uses a dual-chip, 6-step process to upscale HD content into 4K. This essentially means that your old Blu-Rays will be put through and incredibly powerful upscaling process so they can stand comfortably side-by-side with native 4K content. As is expected of most modern LG TVs, these new models also come equipped with Smart TV functionality in the form of the LG Smart TV+ webOS, which allows users to switch between content in an instant via a single click on the interface's “Launcher Bar” menu. Apps supported by the operating system include (but are not limited to) web browsing, music, photo and video file players and streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Instant Video.

The 77-inch model has already been named “Best of Innovations” at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show and has also had its user interface recognised by the prestigious Imaging and Sound Association. The 65-inch EC9700 will be available in the US for $9,999 from October, whilst the 77-inch EG9700 will be hitting North American shores in November for a wallet busting $24,999.
