Google Play Music has announced a rather unique partnership with the subscription dinner service Munchery, which will allow users to order their meals with an accompanying, specifically tailored soundtrack designed to reflect their order. Between August 17 and September 11, Munchery chefs will prepare custom meals inspired by Google Play Music radio stations, in the hope of creating a more personal dining experience for its users. The offering is from Google Play Music’s agency of record Essence, and is certainly a unique concept from a company looking to offer a more boutique take away experience than your average pizza parlour, with local, professional chefs preparing the food (and now, of course, the music).
Each Munchery menu item will correspond with a similarly themed playlist curated on Google Play Music based on different moods, times of day and activities. The custom menus will be available in each of Munchery's current cities (New York, Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles, so no UK cities yet we’re afraid), but will only be available twice a week. Each city has its own unique meal and music selections, which can be viewed on the Munchery website and mobile app.

Munchery VP of Food Nicolas Bernadi said: “Taste and sound both have a special way of bringing people together, so it felt natural to connect them in one simple, fun experience. "We want people to be excited about mealtime -- everything from our locally-sourced ingredients to the mood, soundtrack and environment.” Zena Arnold, head of marketing at Google Play, added: “Turning a great menu into a great moment is all about what you pair with it -- the drinks, your friends and especially the music. Google Play Music and Munchery together bring the best food and the best music to make your dining experience perfect.”
Of course, Munchery’s custom pairings will only provide songs through specific radio stations, so don’t expect to be able to choose your own music. But then, wouldn’t that be completely beside the point? As you might expect, the pairings will be primarily based on moods, and include a sinful chocolate cake mixed with “Coffee Shop Indie Radio,” BBQ ribs accompanied by “Classic Rock Summer,” and sushi roll, lager braised sausages and Hawaiian pork tacos (wow) with a decidedly vaguer sounding “Sun Out, Vibe Out” mix.

The best part is that there are no additional fees when you order one of these custom meals; the Google Play Music radio station code is complimentary. This is the latest piece of news to come from Munchery since it raised $85 million in new funding in back May. It really sounds like an interesting brand that takes the meals on wheels approach, and brings it to those of us who can actually feed ourselves, but sometimes really would rather have someone else to the work, without having to settle for artery clogging fast food. So we hope it makes its way over here sometime soon!
