AdRoll big in Japan

Published by

AdRoll, the world's largest retargeting platform, has announced plans to expand into Japan with the opening of its new Tokyo office, which will be led by a local, all-star team of industry heavyweights. This is the company's sixth office, after opening regional offices in New York, Dublin, Sydney, and London. The expansion into a new country also brings with it translation and localisation necessities of course, so in addition to the core Tokyo office team, AdRoll's self-service solution has been fully translated and localised for the Japanese market. The newly-established team will be providing full-service account management to Japanese customers. The announcement comes on the heels of a banner year for AdRoll, in which the company announced $70 million in funding and reached a milestone of 1,200 % year-over-year increase in data processed.

The afore-mentioned heavyweights who will be leading the new AdRoll Japan office include Makoto Arima as vice president and chairman, and Luciano Kohmura as managing director. Arima has vital experience at Yahoo! Japan, where, as managing director, he grew the business to a billion dollars in revenue during his six-year tenure, and most recently served for four years as MD at Google Japan. Kohmura, who will lead day-to-day operations at the new office, also joins AdRoll from a stint at Google, where he held multiple roles during his nine-year tenure. He most recently served as director of new product sales across Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Alongside the exciting leading team, the newly established office, which is located in Tokyo's thriving Roppongi district, will be hiring more than 25 new employees throughout the year, hoping to expand the office and the company's presence in the region dramatically by the end of 2015.

AdRoll are entering the Japanese market at an exceptionally opportune time when digital advertising spend in the country exceeds $9 billion, with a projected growth to $11 billion by 2018. Mobile advertising spend is also growing exponentially, and already represents a third of total spend in Japan, which reinforces the demand for AdRoll's cross-device capabilities. AdRoll Japan has already signed up 11 local digital agencies and 2 media reps to participate in a pilot program that will give them the ability to deploy sophisticated retargeting campaigns across multiple platforms and devices. These agencies include CyberAgent, OPT, Septeni, iRep, TransCosmos, Vixia, Microad Plus, Adways, United, Cyber Consultant, GMO Nikko, CCI and DAC.

Aaron Bell, CEO and co-founder of AdRoll, said “As one of the largest advertising markets in the world, Japan represents a massive opportunity to scale performance marketing across brands of all sizes and verticals.” He feels that “Having respected, experienced leaders such as Makoto and Luciano at the helm,” shows the company's commitment to “Building a world-class organisation in Japan and delivering a fully localised solution tailored to the Japanese market.”
