The importance of being modest | #MemberSpotlight

Published by

There is a great deal of stuff one can learn by simply travelling around the world. Demian Campos is the Founder & CCO of creative and advertising agency WINGS, and he has travelled far and wide to occupy a number of creative positions in the industry.

Sure, there is a great deal of stuff one can learn by simply travelling around the world. But Demian Campos has learned the most important virtue of all: that being modest, authentic and hungry for genuine ideas is far better than letting yourself be devoured by your own ego.

For this Member Spotlight, we are learning more about Demian and his lovely agency, based in the heart of Caracas, Venezuela.

How did you get into the industry?

My parents were publicists. Since I was a child, we talked a lot about advertising at our weekend lunches.

Can you explain your creative process?

I really like to observe since I was a child. I'm not one of the creatives who sits down and thinks. After getting married to a brief, I think of insight and ideas come at any moment. Then if we land them to give it more strength

How would you describe your style?

It is always full of insight. And many of these insights are from our own experiences.

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

My father for me was my god, then as archangels there are Washington Olivetto, David Droga and Marcello Serpa. My superheroes are Anselmo Ramos and Gaston Bigio.

If you had to pick one ideal client/employer, who would that be and why?

It would be transparent, smart and risky. I think they are the traits of those who achieve important things. And always with a lot of background work.

How has technology affected the way you work?

It has greatly enhanced it.

New communication channels were opened that amplify the campaigns. We put in less money and we reach more people. We are living an incredible era of advertising where if an idea is incredible, it crosses borders thanks to so many formats.

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

I live very close to the beach and since I was a child, I practice surfing. This always keeps me in good spirits. I started as a creative painting surfboard, and now I am the coach of my 9-year-old son who is a sports promise in my country. This keeps me clear and positive all the time.

What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?

Everyone would think that it is some prize, however, always as a surfer, I have been very eco-friendly. In 2015, after having made some ecological announcements, they were exposed in the gate of the Saint Germain Park in the framework of the world meeting on climate change. COP21. On that grid they have placed pieces by Dali, Picasso among others.

A friend was walking around and she sent me a picture. Then it came out in an article. It was something that marked my career.

How do you recharge away from the office?

Surfing with my son. Something that I had not even dreamed of.

What is one tip for other aspiring creatives looking for work?

Be in constant renewal. You are what you do and the ideas that come to mind that are good, must be done. The one who has a portfolio and will always have the facility to enter a good job site.

What is the one thing that you would change about the industry?

The creative industry would advance much faster without so much ego. We would already be stepping on the moon.

Any websites, books or resources you would recommend?

More than that. Go out into the streets, observe, visit museums, see movies that nobody sees, or the great classics that marked the history of cinema. Curiosity is the talent of every creative.
