Take a look at the delightfully ancient and metaphorical style of this talented illustrator | #MemberSpotlight

Published by

It's hard to find a style of illustration as fascinating and unique as the one of Virginia Mori, a talented freelance illustrator from Italy.

Virginia's favourite tools are pencil, ink and ballpoint pen. The direct consequence of that is a wondrous blend of traditional illustration techniques, making her work truly shine through the page. Virginia has won a number of awards in her careers and directed a series of short animated films, working for countless clients in Italy and beyond. A quick glimpse at her beautiful works alone will suffice to demonstrate the strength of her unique talent.

In this Member Spotlight, we are learning more about Virginia Mori, illustrator and animation director represented by IllustrationZone.

How did you get into the industry?

Thanks to hard work and international competition prizes!

Where are you based now and who do you work for?

I’m based in Milan and Pesaro, I’m a freelancer and I recently joined the Agency IllustrationZone.

If you weren’t in your current industry, what would you be doing?

I would be a Rock singer!

Can you explain your creative process?

I always start with a lot of research and influences from any kind of field. Sometimes ideas occur at night thanks to dreams and nightmares, then I elaborate everything in my own ways and try to create something different, trying to be personal and universal at the same time.

How would you describe your style?

I’m probably not the right person to describe my style, but if I had to choose some adjectives today it would be ancient and metaphorical.

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

I have a lot. It depends from the moment I’m living, but one of my greatest sources of inspiration is Gustave Dorè.

If you had to pick one ideal client/employer, who would that be and why?

If I'm allowed to dream, I would choose many, not just one. I would love to work for the Music Industry and create music videos or covers of albums for Nick Cave, Aldous Harding, Tom Yorke, Agnes Obel, St Vincent, Beach House, Fever Ray… and many, many others.

I also love to observe the intersection between Art and Fashion, it’s something very frequent in the most recent years. I would love to work for Dior.

How has technology affected the way you work?

It is a difficult question. I'm approaching technology very slowly so I think it is early to say something, but I think it’s necessary for a lot of research in order to remain faithful to your personal style.

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

Be curious.

What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?

Usually I’m never too proud of my works, I’m always thinking I could be better!

I like the result of the illustrations for John Mayer’s video, Walt Grace’s submarine test, directed by Virgillio Villoresi. I like “The Surrealist Dinner Party” board game project I did recently for the Resonym and the illustrated book “Feeling Bed” by Davide Cali, Hop Editions.

How do you recharge away from the office?

Nature and Silence are my way to recharge.

Any websites, books or resources you would recommend?

Right now I’m reading “La voce delle immagini” di Chiara Frugoni, Einaudi. It’s about Medieval Iconography, I love it.

As for blogs and websites, I would suggest “This is Colossal".
