Riding on a dream with Anastasia Beltyukova - #AnnualSpotlight

Published by

We can't help but love everything that Anastasia Beltyukova (aka Tribambuka) creates for the world to see.

With a beautiful dreamlike style and wondrous little creatures populating her art, Anastasia is an incredibly talented illustrator with true passion for her work and someone who won her first Bronze with the Annual awards in 2020, after entering over 3 times since the Annual's inception. She's one of the most valued members in the Creativepool community – and we are so impatient to see what she'll submit this year!

For this Annual Spotlight, we had a lovely chat with one of our absolute favourite illustrators on Creativepool to learn more about her craft, her experience with Annual 2020 and more.

The submissions deadline for Annual 2021 is just a few weeks away! Enter now to grab your slice of creative immortality.

What feels unique about The Annual?

It feels like an exciting International community! Unfortunately there was no party for 2020, but I’ve attended most of the previous ones, and it’s nice to see it growing and being a part of it.

How does it feel to have won the Creativepool Annual Awards?

Very exciting indeed!

Will you be entering again this year? If so, what are your hopes?

I’m entering both illustration and animation categories this year as I have some exciting projects to share. Hoping to win again of course, and hoping for a party too, to network and connect and have fun with people in real life.

Can you tell us more about your winning submissions and what you think impressed the judges?

My winning project is corporate illustrations for Zappi, an online platform for marketing research. I think what impressed the judges might have been that me and Zappi design team approached corporate illustration differently - it doesn’t have to be boring, doesn’t have to be neat, flat and vector, and it doesn’t even have to have people as characters! We had lots of fun exploring all the way we could express complex abstract ideas in a playful, soulful and even magical way through whimsical and strange creatures living in a Zappi universe. Think a grumpy pineapple riding a shopping trolley on roller skates, or a dancing teapot with wings. This year I’m going to submit an animated explainer taking these characters even further on their journey. I wish I had more clients like that, it was pure fun!

What advice would you share with other agencies and individuals looking to grab a prize?

I’m not sure if there’s any rules, to be honest, but experience tells me to go for the boldest projects you have, or the ones you had most fun working on. Fun is always a good criteria!

How do you feel Covid has impacted the creative landscape in 2020?

I think it impacted it massively and accelerated a lot of processes that were going on anyway (like embracing online meetings and events, and working remotely, or even art world finally accepting 3D, motion, animation and illustration as legitimate art in the NFT space). I’m quite happy to not have to go to offices anymore, I love working from my studio equipped to me taste and needs and I like working alone, but I certainly miss meeting people and having some creative buzz together. If The Annual could find a way for us to meet and network and get to know each other - that would help indeed!

What are your hopes for 2021 and beyond?

I believe that 2020 was a ‘a belly of the whale’, speaking in the mythological language - a moment when the whole world was devoured by a whale and had been in a dark transitional phase, after which it has to reborn in a new quality and on a new level. We are still are in this liminal space, but we can see the light in the end of the tunnel. I’m hoping that 2021 will be a beginning of this new era, I’m hoping these changes would be towards a more beautiful and less wasteful and cruel world. That we turn into a butterfly after coming out of this cocoon!

On the personal note - I’m hoping to get on a level when I can only work with fun people who trust me with their fun projects (I’m getting there!) I’m hoping to work on projects that have impact on the larger scale, that benefit the planet and the society. I’m hoping to get an illustration agent who will help me deal with admin and negotiations! I’m hoping to have enough time for my art and personal projects too.

What is your most exciting project in the next year?

I’m not sure how to measure the boost that the Annual gave me, but it definitely raised my profile. I’m also very pleased to find out that I’m #7 ranked illustrator on Creativepool website! I don’t have anything big planned for this year (yet) - I just finished all the big projects I was working on, and need new ones to enter the next year’s competition (hey commissioners! :-) But I’m working on my personal project about liminality.
