A logo a day keeps procrastination away!

Published by

Oh for Pete’s sake!!! Did you know that over the course of the last ten years the average attention span has dropped from 12 minutes to a short 3 to 5 minutes and it keeps dropping every year. It is worth talking into consideration in the last 30 years procrastination levels quadrupled (more than 20% of the human population).

Like other designers I found myself procrastinate a lot. I needed a change, a challenge, to create mini-goals and time lines to keep me on track. So I came up with this fun game that I really wanted to share with you. Instead of procrastinating on non productive ways (social media, games etc.) why don’t we make a logo a day, to keep procrastination away! I do understand that this might occur more than once a day but at least let’s try it twice a week and see how it goes. Lets challenge ourselves, find a brief and create the logo from scratch… UNDER AN HOUR…. That includes brainstorming, rough sketching and finalization of the logo. This is not going to be a competition. The only person who can judge you is yourself! Don’t forget that you are in control of the quality of your work and how you deal with your clients and time. This fun game is targeting people who want to build confidence, skills and a personal portfolio, why not. This is not limited to junior designers, for instance a senior can try it and see how fast he/she can have a finish product that they will be proud of and ready to use!*

a) You need a paper, a pencil and a pc (graphic tablet is an option too)

b) Have a logo completed in less than an hour

c) One of the easiest ways to find a ‘real’ brief is to find it from speculative work websites. YOU DON’T need to enter yourself into the competition. Some people might think this kind of websites are unethical and degrades our industry, which is true. I want to analyze the particular subject in a different article. As I stated earlier this is something fun that can bring designers closer. It also builds their confidence and skills. I am open to any suggestions, For example each day one designer can create a brief and all the other designers will try and finish a logo. We can all post our creations into one portfolio account and who knows maybe we can even judge and vote the best one of the day!! This month I was busy but I managed to "procrastinate" 5 times - which means five new logos came to life!!! (Images below)

Snap! Ah…

Sometimes my day just feels precisely like this ‘50’s(?) game of ‘Domino - Circus’. Which is basically ‘match the pairs you idiot’. Or rather more romantically ‘ce jeu amusera les tout petits et les plus grandes.’ As the languid...
