5 benefits of meditation for writers

Have you ever read Meditations by the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius? These were his private reflections on philosophy, happiness, peace, pleasure and the meaning of life as a whole.

Why am I mentioning it? If you’re a writer, you’ll definitely find this gem of a book extraordinary. If you’re a meditation practitioner, it could be the most revealing book you’ll ever read.

If you’re a writer and a meditation practitioner, then it will teach you about the connection between the two practices. It shows that some of your strongest writing can result from meditations.

1. Meditation can unstuck your words

You have the words inside you and you know what you were going to write about. But your thoughts got jammed somewhere along the process and you can’t find a way out of that clutter.

Some writers know the drill: they get help from an assignment writing service. Others stay persistent, but can’t get through the writer’s blog for a very long time. Meditation can help!

When you meditate, you strive for the moment of calmness, when absolutely no thoughts are present. It may be just a second, but you’ll achieve it. It’s the state when creativity can happen.

Just sit there. Don’t expect anything. Something might or might not happen. Embrace your current state of being, as it is. When you’re done meditating, you’ll feel calmer. Some of the ideas you’ve buried down may come to surface. 

2. Meditation is introspection

When you write a book, you tend to please your audience. You think: what would they like? How would they perceive these characters? What types of sentences would they write?

So you read all kinds of guides and tips on how to please the modern audience.

Meditation takes you away from that vicious circle. It faces you with yourself. It makes you ask a single question: what do you want to write? As Hermann Hesse wrote in his Demian, “All I wanted to do was live the life that was inside me, trying to get out.” Isn’t that what being a writer is all about?

3. Meditation helps you to focus

That moment when you’re fully focused on your work - isn’t it the most wonderful thing ever? You wake up early, you start a blank document, and you stay productive all day long.

It’s great! The only problem is that such days are extremely rare. Throughout your usual day, you face all sorts of distractions and you can’t stay immune to all of them.

You already know what helps: meditation! The mere purpose of meditation is to focus the mind on a single thing. It may be your breathe. It may be visualization. It may be a mantra. The point is that you’re focusing your mind on a single thing and you’re training it to stay focused. If your thoughts wander away, you bring them back to the subject of meditation.

With time and practice, you achieve the ability to stay focused. You’ll be able to use that skill outside meditation, too. When you decide to stay focused on something, you’ll be strong enough to resist the distractions.

4. Meditation gives you something to write about

When you’re in the middle of a writer’s block, a writing exercise can do wonders for you. So here’s one you can try: meditate and write about that experience right after.

Choose your favorite type of meditation. It may be a guided meditation or a self-guided session. You may practice aum meditation, zen meditation, progressive relaxation, kundalini meditation, or anything else you like.

When you come back from the meditation, take a piece of paper and write about the experience. Believe me; you’ll definitely have something to write about. The meditative state triggers your deepest emotions and thoughts.

5. Meditation helps you calm down

Writing is tough. When you can’t go through a productive day, you blame yourself. You go through mountains of stress just to write a single page.

When you meditate on a regular basis, you build immunity against stress. You realize that no matter how much work you’ve done today, you made an effort. You gave your best and that’s what matters. You’re allowed to have a bad day. You just need to calm down and carry on.

It’s time for all writers to start meditating! I’m convinced that you’ll write better when you find that connection with your deepest self. Meditation will guide you on that path.
