Of big cats and ambitions - #AnnualSpotlight

Published by

Mr Perou entered the Creativepool community like a comet piercing through the night sky. His stunning photography left an everlasting mark in our hearts since the date he joined, to the point that we were quite thrilled to see him enter Annual 2020 last year – and secure a Silver with his BIG Cats project too.

It's easy to tell how much Mr Perou loves his own craft. His BIG Cats project is a wonderful display of what the art of photography can achieve – to capture timeless moments, daring where no one else ever would. Mr Perou's next project is, by his own admission, a bit more niche than the BIG Cats themselves – but nonetheless, following a successful campaign on Kickstarter, we have no doubt that it's going to be an amazing one. And we can't wait to see what Perou has in store for us this year as well.

For this final Annual Spotlight of 2021, we had a chat with Mr Perou to learn more about his experience with The Annual and his most exciting projects in the near future.

Time is ticking! The final submissions deadline for Annual 2021 is only three days away. Enter by Thursday 10th June to grab your slice of creative immortality!

What feels unique about The Annual?

It feels great to be showcased with some of the best from the Creativepool community: less of one of the countless creative competitions and more of a celebration of great work.

How does it feel to have won the Creativepool Annual Awards?

It feels right :)

Will you be entering again this year? If so, what are your hopes?

I will enter again this year. My current project is more niche than the last one though (everyone loves animals) so I’m not expecting to do quite as well.

Can you tell us more about your winning submissions and what you think impressed the judges?

My winning submission was a series of portraits of BIG cats that I had photographed inside an actual lion’s den. Similar hasn’t really been done before and I think the judges appreciated the technical eloquence of the photos and my level of commitment to the project. I guess?

What advice would you share with other agencies and individuals looking to grab a prize?

Work to please yourself and if it picks up awards, that’s an added bonus. Do work that you’re passionate about.

How do you feel Covid has impacted the creative landscape in 2020?

WIPEOUT. But good ideas and determined effort will see some of us through the winter.
One hopes being in The Annual helps us attention seekers in our quest for attention.

What are your hopes for 2021 and beyond?

Dancing, restriction free travelling, friends, family and international exhibitions.
everything we’re been having trouble with the last year and a bit…

What is your most exciting project in the next year?

My next book is a collaboration with Karl Hyde from the band Underworld and designed by Paul from Peter and Paul. Essentially it’s unexpectedly beautiful, urban landscapes of empty English underpasses, at night, accompanied by graffitied text we found along the way. Its so super-niche we had to raise funds to print it on KICKSTARTER. But we made it, and the project is now funded.

If you love books, art, photography, underpasses, urban landscapes and beautiful design, head to this Kickstarter page to learn more about it all.

Thank you :)
