Navigating the Job Market: Addressing Hiring Process Challenges and Finding Your Next Opportunity

Published by
A short article I wrote. Provides guidance and support for individuals who have been affected by recent layoffs. It covers the difficulties of job searching, tips for successful communication with hiring managers, and the importance of finding a company that aligns with your personal and professional goals. The article also highlights the impact of AI on the future of work and the importance of being selective when choosing a job.
Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of taking care of oneself and one's mental health during this difficult time. Even if my article only helps one person, I will consider it a success!

As we near the end of January 2023, it has become clear that the year is not starting well for many tech industry people. Reports of mass layoffs have been coming in from a number of well-known companies, leaving thousands of employees without a job. The recent trend of companies announcing layoffs has been evident on social media, particularly on my LinkedIn newsfeed, where posts from individuals announcing that they have been layoff have become increasingly common.

As someone who also experienced the hardship of being layoff 8 months ago, I can empathize with the individuals who are currently facing this difficult situation.

Losing a job can be a traumatic experience that can lead to financial insecurity and emotional stress. The job search process can also be challenging, as finding a new job that aligns with your skills, interests, and values can take time.

I understand the feeling of uncertainty and the pressure to find a new job quickly.

I remember the stress of sending resumes, attending interviews, and the disappointment of getting rejected. I know how it feels to be in a position where you are not sure about your next steps and future.

I thought of writing a short article, sharing my thoughts, helpful tips, and what to avoid.

Few numbers of companies that have undergone layoffs, to put it into perspective

Spotify: 400 employees

Google (Alphabet): 12,000 employees

Microsoft: 10,000 employees

Amazon: 18,000 employees

Salesforce: 7,000 employees

and many more...

It's also worth considering that the current economic climate, especially due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the ongoing war, it has affected many companies and industries. It could be that the companies had to make difficult decisions to ensure long-term sustainability and success. But the fact is that the future of work is changing, and we know that AI is going to play a huge role in that change. Many of the jobs we know today may not exist in a few years, as AI and automation take over tasks that were previously done by humans. It's important to think about how we prepare for that future, both as individuals and as a society.

In these difficult times, it's important to remember that being laid off is not a reflection of your worth as an employee or person. It's important to take care of yourself and your mental health during this time and to remember that you are not alone in this struggle. There are resources and support available to help you navigate this difficult time and find your next journey.

When applying for a job, it is crucial that your CV and cover letter effectively communicate your qualifications and experience to the hiring manager. However, if it appears that the hiring manager has not given them proper attention, it may be best to move on and explore other opportunities.

It is also wise to steer clear of companies that prioritize technical skills over a candidate's mindset. A positive and productive attitude can be just as, if not more, valuable to a company in the long run. Additionally, if a company insists on administering a basic skills test despite the fact that you have provided examples of previous projects and endorsements from previous employers, it may indicate that the company does not value or recognize your experience and qualifications.

It is essential to avoid wasting your time on companies that do not value or appreciate your time and experience. Finding an organization that aligns with your personal and professional goals, has a positive culture and values, and recognizes your contributions is vital.

I AM PICKY!

And everyone should!

The statement that one should not be picky when unemployed and in need of a job is common, but it is important to remember that a job is not just a source of income but also a significant part of one's life. A job can have a significant impact on an individual's well-being, both physically and mentally, and it is essential to find a position that aligns with one's personal and professional goals.

Being picky when looking for a job is not only about finding the highest-paying position, but also about finding a job that fits one's values, skills, and interests and has a positive culture, and values, and recognizes your contributions. When you find a job that fits your personal and professional goals, it is more likely that you will be engaged and motivated to perform at your best, which can lead to better performance, a better attitude, and a better chance of career advancement.

Additionally, accepting a job that doesn't align with your values, skills, and interests can lead to dissatisfaction and burnout, which can have a negative impact on one's mental and physical well-being. This can lead to a negative impact on your work performance, which can result in a lower chance of career advancement, and negatively affect your overall well-being.

So I got layoff, now what?

  1. Take time to process your emotions: Losing a job can be a traumatic experience, so it's important to take the time to process your emotions and grieve the loss.
  2. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile: Make sure your resume and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date and highlight your relevant skills and experience.
  3. Network: Reach out to your professional network and let them know that you're looking for a new job. They may know of opportunities that are not publicly advertised.
  4. Research job opportunities: Look for job opportunities in your field and research the companies that interest you.
  5. Check out online resources: There are many online resources that can help with your job searches such as job search engines, job boards, and professional networking sites.
  6. Update your skills: Take the time to learn new skills or update your existing skills through online courses or workshops.
  7. Be open to different opportunities: Don't limit yourself to one specific job or industry. Be open to different opportunities and consider exploring different fields or industries.
  8. Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or a professional counselor for support during this difficult time
  9. Take care of yourself: Losing a job can be stressful, so make sure to take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising.
  10. Keep a positive attitude: Keep a positive attitude and remember that it's not a failure to lose a job, it's an opportunity to find a new one that aligns better with your goals and values.

One effective strategy for finding job opportunities is to create a list of companies you wish to work for and actively search for job openings and recruiters on LinkedIn. For example, go to a company's LinkedIn profile, and you can use the search bar under the "People" tab to search for keywords such as "talent acquisition."

    **
While the search may yield many results, the point is to reach out to recruiters who are open to talking and potentially connecting with job seekers. By sending a personalized message, thanking the recruiter for connecting, inquiring about the job opening, and sharing your experience, CV, strengths, and why you think you are a perfect fit for the job. Keep the message short, friendly, and to the point.

    "ATS CHALLENGES"

As a designer, I have struggled with the use of applicant tracking systems (ATS) in the job application process. These systems often prioritize a specific format and structure for resumes, which can be at odds with designers' creative and visually-driven approach. To overcome this challenge, my advice is for designers to create two versions of their CVs. One that adheres to ATS guidelines and another that showcases their design skills. This allows for an increased chance of being selected for an interview and for presenting qualifications in the best light possible.

    "LACK OF SALARY RANGE DISCLOSURE"

It baffles me how companies still refrain from disclosing salary range information in job descriptions. If a job applicant must inquire about salary range, it diminishes the credibility of the hiring process and raises suspicions of compensation inequality within the organization. This not only wastes the job applicant's time but also the company's time. It is imperative for companies to include salary range information in job descriptions to avoid confusion and ensure transparency in the hiring process.

When applying for a senior position, it is important to be able to showcase the work that has been accomplished in recent years. This includes the range of work and an explanation of how it was achieved. If a hiring manager is not convinced by the work presented, it may be beneficial to seek references and build trust. Avoid unrealistic technical tests that consume a significant amount of time, particularly when they resemble the work that the applicant would be doing on the job. These tests can be demotivating and feel like a waste of time. While tests may be appropriate for junior positions or for applicants without a portfolio, it is important to remember that even junior candidates are eager to learn and grow in their careers. Ultimately, passion and willingness to achieve should be the primary focus.

    "GHOSTING"

When investing time and effort into interviewing with a company, it can be frustrating and disheartening to experience cancellations and then ultimately be ghosted without any communication regarding the hiring decision. It is crucial for companies to have the decency to inform candidates of their decision, regardless of the outcome. Being ghosted or learning about the decision from a third party is a sign of a lack of professional conduct, and it's not something that should be tolerated. It's important for job seekers to have patience during the job search process and to be prepared for situations like this, as it happens often. However, it is also important for companies to maintain a level of professionalism and respect toward their job applicants.

As we move forward, I hope there will be positive changes in the hiring process.

If you are reading this and have recently been layoff, know that you are not alone. I am committed to helping as much as I can, as I understand the struggles of job searching and do not wish for others to go through the same difficulties.

Don't be afraid to reach out!

It is crucial to remember that your worth should never be underestimated. Never settle for less than you deserve and have patience. The job market can sometimes be unpredictable and frustrating, but the right opportunity will come to those who are persistent and have confidence in their abilities. Trust in your skills, qualifications, and experience, and be prepared to seize the right opportunity when it arises. Remember that job searching is a process and do not get discouraged by a few setbacks, keep pushing and the right job will come your way. Best of luck in your job search.
