MY Single Band

Published by

Following my last post on the ingenious product design of Chris Godfrey, here is something from the other end of the spectrum i.e the absolutely crap end. Welcome to the world of MY Single Band people!

For just £6 you can purchase what is essentially a coloured elastic band which is worn as a bracelet and reveals your single relationship status to the rest of the world.

*

There are 7 colours to choose from, if you can't decide on one then you can get two for £10.

The silicone bracelet is the brainchild of British-Danish couple Rina Mardahl and Rob Young – with the first letters of their surname making up the ‘MY’ part of the bracelet (puke). As if this wasn't enough to bear, each bracelet is embossed with the words 'FATE', 'DESTINY', and 'FUTURE' (more puke).

Rina and Rob reckon that wearing their bands 'increase new encounters, lower the fear of first introductions, and suit busy modern lifestyles.’

...

*

Claiming the bands could 'change the face of dating forever', they continue: 'The launch of MY Single Band is a revolutionary concept. When worn, the band visibly identifies that the wearer is single, just like a wedding ring shows you are married.

Whilst the rest of the world ponders what is wrong with the humble wedding ring, Rina and Rob are gearing up to make their millions. If I see anyone wearing one of these on the tube I will be a.suprised and b.would avoid them like the plague.

*

Is this what romance has been reduced to? What ever happened to the lingering stares, the tentative investigations into another's status carried out by a friend and building up to the ultimate question 'do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/partner/lover etc?

*

Why not make this even easier and colour code the bands into the following categories...

Turquoise - One night stands with strangers only please

Orange - I'm married but want a bit on the side and hide this bracelet up my cuff when my wife/husband is around

Pink - I'm gay

Powder Blue - Forget the 5 year plan it's a 5 month plan

Navy Blue - Looking for fellow swingers

Red - Looking for a dominatrix

Black - I'll pretty much say yes to anything on offer

When I was a teenager I went through a phase of wearing a WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?) wristband. This was not a high point, but i'd sooner be wearing that again than one of these.

Would you wear a MY Single Band?
