Happiness in Design with Izzy Lloyd-Jones

Published by

It was only yesterday that we told you about the story of Anthony Birland, a 3D modeller who is still happy about his life choices today. Anthony is spending time doing what he loves, following his vocation and his inner voice.

A much similar thing has happened to freelance graphic designer Isabel "Izzy" Lloyd-Jones. Born a marketer yet having always loved art since school, Izzy gave up her career in marketing to put her passion into practice every day. She has not stopped ever since.

For this Member Spotlight, we are getting to know an accomplished creative with ardent passion for creativity, inspiration, design and everything in between.

How did you get into the industry?

Having always enjoyed art class at school, I don’t know why I never considered it for a career but after starting my first job in marketing I soon realised that I felt happiest when I was designing and being creative. Whenever I was swayed by beautiful packaging or wishing I had been the one who has designed it, I knew this was something I needed to pursue. I’m now based in Surrey, currently working as a freelance graphic designer.

If you weren’t in your current industry, what would you be doing?

One thing I truly love to do is taking photographs. I enjoy documenting the places and times I feel happiest so I would love to be able to travel the world with a camera in my hand. Luckily photography and graphic design go hand in hand so never say never!

*

Can you explain your creative process?

I've always enjoyed the physical process of design, so when I receive a brief I like to start on paper. Drawing mind maps, sketching, there’s something about the freedom of pen and paper which lets the creative juices flow.

*

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

I find a lot of my inspiration through my surroundings. I grew up in the south of France surrounded by colour, so I think I’m naturally drawn to using lots of colour in my projects. Whenever I have a creative block, I’ll leave my desk and take a walk. Inspiration is all around us, we just have to look for it.

*

How do you recharge away from the office?

I’ve always been a sporty person so after a day sitting in front of the computer, I’m itching to get outdoors. I find going for a run helps clear my mind and boost my mood before settling in for the evening in front of the TV.

What advice would you give to other aspiring creatives looking for work?

One thing I would say is honing your craft takes time and experimentation, so while we have the time, make the most of it and don’t stop until you’re happy with what you’re doing. I’ve been really enjoying getting involved in the Behance daily creative challenges recently

What’s your one big hope for the future of the creative industries?

Where this crisis takes us next is anyone’s guess. But so far the creative community has stepped up to the plate, and I’m sure that whatever happens, we’ll continue to support each other through difficult times.
