Designers’ Response to Secure Our Future

Published by

With “well-being” and “sustainability” being the key focus nowadays, we’ve created a shortlist of new innovative solutions and products showcased at Futurebuild this year where designers and brands across the globe came together to combat the current climate emergency and build support for a sustainable future.

Integrating Animals Within Design

Using 75% recycled materials, Green & Blue have developed an architecturally unique product with a simple mechanism aimed to integrate the beauty, liveliness and diversity of wildlife into design and protect our environment for future generations.

Their products create a sustainable and biodiverse eco-system for endangered species such as bees, bats and birds whilst still having the key properties to be a durable, attractive product.

A Bright Idea: Using Plants to Create Energy

To put a stop to climate change, Plant-e is using sustainable technology by making electricity from living plants.

Plant-e have developed a perfect formula in which their product is CO2 negative and generates renewable energy whilst also being a fun and vibrant product which contributes to the pleasant, green environment in both indoor and outdoor landscapes.

Interior Design vs Climate Change

With innovation at the heart of their design, Solid Soul Design have developed a practical furniture solution which not only offers a sculptural and unique aesthetic to spaces but an environmentally conscious design using “Glass Reinforced Concrete” which reduces carbon footprint by 40% compared to normal concrete.

The UK’s First Carbon Neutral Laminates

Being one of the first of its kind, Biocarbonate Laminates are breathing sustainability back into spaces with their environmentally conscious values not compromising cost, durability, and quality.

This unique and revolutionary product is the definition of sustainable design but still holds the essential properties of being a high resistance, formable, fire performance, antibacterial protection, solid grade laminate.

C0Eating and Self-healing Concrete

Is Bacteria helping the fight against climate change? Concrete with self-healing properties can repair itself when damaged by filling the cracks with calcium carbonate produced by bacteria living in the concrete.

Hungry for some CO2? A bioreceptive concrete has been developed which absorbs CO2 and traps pollution particles to create cleaner breathing air. Being comprised of 90% recycled materials, it is the perfect example of science and infrastructure working together to tackle climate change.

These scientifically innovative materials provide a built-in resilience to climate change and its external consequences that are arising in an increasingly urban environment.

The design industry is slowly beginning to see inventions of dynamic and eye-catching designs within spaces, but also the prioritisation of using renewable and sustainable materials which aim to combat the current climate crisis.
