Brand Case Studies: Bright ideas with WATT A LAMP

Published by

The brand mission of WATT A LAMP is to introduce modern high-end lighting concepts that inspire and surprise with innovative design products and challenging materials.

Suspended within an authentic universe of design, art, craftsmanship and quality these lighting champions are amongst the most rewarded in Europe, having received prizes including Danish Designer of the Year, the Bo Bedre Furniture Prize and a Red Dot Award. Their first collection as a collective is currently available, curated by the two established Danish designers Rikke Hagen and Andreas Lund.

"By liberating ourselves from traditional and conservative thinking, we strive to work with design as an art form that originates from the poetic."

As ever, Scandinavian design comes in top. Subtle stories and interesting narratives are woven through all of WATT A LAMP’s top-quality products - all designed by a team of hand-picked Danish designers. Scandinavian design’s innate use of ground-breaking technology married with artistic beauty is as confounding as it is stunning. And nowhere does it shine brighter than with these guys.

Speaking about their approach to design, Morten Kjӕr Stovgaard, one part of the collective said; “We find it essential to develop products with substance that reach beyond a certain artistic trend. By liberating ourselves from traditional and conservative thinking, we strive to work with design as an art form that originates from the poetic.”

A good example of this poetic approach comes in the form of MUSH, a lamp with definite poetic expression. Fusing earthy colours and quality materials including wood, textile, copper and brass, the design is both charming and functional.

There are also aspects of the architectural in WATT A LAMP’s offerings. Designer, Amanda Betz, describes a creative process that goes some way to explaining this, saying; “Typically I begin with classic pencil sketches and paper that I fold, cut and print. Later, these paper prototypes are translated into sturdier materials. I am particularly interested in the use of patterns, which I always approach from a three-dimensional perspective.” Betz’s designs are available in the MoMA shop in New York, as well as WATT A LAMP.

Amongst their influences, the collective pay homage to the Scottish engineer, James Watt, whose work, they say; “helped pave the way for the industrial breakthrough that included the introduction of electric light.”
