Exploring the sci-fi spaces of Erik Blaho | #MemberSpotlight

Published by

While we often hear from artists and designers here at the Creativepool #MemberSpotlight, it’s rare indeed to speak to an architect, particularly one as fascinating as Erik Blaho.

The Slovakian architect began his career by focusing on the study of residential buildings from a "higher perspective, to see the whole picture.” He decided to concentrate on urban planning during his master degree studies and after graduation, Erik worked in several architectural studios, where he focused on acquiring important skills in all areas of architecture and interior design.

He’s worked on projects of all architectural scales - from designing residential interiors through to family houses, office spaces, apartment buildings and even entire city districts. He has enriched this experience by working for real estate development companies and gained awareness of aspects of architecture and design from the client's side.

Today, we caught up with Erik to shine a spotlight on the journey he’s starting to take today with his own studio, his creative process and how his fascination with sci-fi and technology inspires his architectural designs.

How did you get into the industry?

I have always been creative and when the time came to decide which path to choose, I decided to study architecture.

Where are you based now and who do you work for?

Currently, I am based in Bratislava, Slovakia. After years of working for others, I have set up a studio. I'm at the beginning of a new journey with my own studio, therefore, I am looking forward to new possibilities and opportunities.

If you weren’t in your current industry, what would you be doing?

I believe I would still find myself in the creative industry, probably as a product designer or 3D artist.

Can you explain your creative process? What makes it unique?

*

I don't know if my creative process is unique. I always start by researching the area where the building will be built, because I firmly believe that uniqueness of architecture is in its deep connection with its surroundings. Therefore, the building design should reflect this unique aspect.

Subsequently, I start sketching the first ideas. I always try to find a way to meet all the client's requirements and at the same time create an attractive design that does not disturb its surroundings and, if possible, improves the environment where it is located.

How would you describe your style?

I think it is mainly minimalism but I am also fascinated by sci-fi and technologies and their incorporation into design. I also emphasise that when designing the architecture, it is always necessary to take into account the tradition, history and natural conditions of the region where the building will be built.

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

*

Herzog & de Meuron, Chipperfield, Foster and Partners, Zumthor and there are many more but I gain inspiration also from movies, books, comic books, computer games, fine art and digital art. At present, there are many possibilities and many industries from which one can take inspiration, you just need to be open and receptive without prejudices.

What tips would you give to aspiring creatives looking for work?

Think about skills you are good at and those in which you are lagging behind and then decide if you want to be jack of all trades or you want to rather focus on improving skills that you enjoy and you are already good at and then to master them. If it is the latter, it may be more difficult to find a job but when you find one, most likely you will love your job and you will progress faster.

What tips would you give to other professionals to get more clients?

Don't be afraid to be different and have a unique approach or style because being different from the competition is what ultimately makes a person stand out, especially in a well-established industry.

What kind of tools/kit/software could you not do without?

*

Paper, pencil and Blender. Blender is a software that I discovered two years ago and today I cannot imagine replacing it with anything else.

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

I would say to keep a balance, to have more interests and hobbies, not just live for work.

What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?

I don’t think I can single out just one achievement but I am always very proud when I have a satisfied client, when I have designed a project with which I came out of the comfort zone or when I have designed something that has aroused discussion.

What is the one thing that you would change about the industry?

*

A faster ability to respond to climate change.
