Cannes Lions announces Global Creativity Report 2016 results

Inspiring creativity, celebration, education and networking for 60 years and setting a global benchmark for creative excellence, the definitive rankings and analysis from the annual Cannes Lions Global Creativity Report have now been announced.

A record breaking 43, 101 award entries were received from 91 countries, 24 Lions Awards were judged by 387 jurors and 61 countries proudly took home their trophies, making The Cannes Lions International Festival a global meeting place for branded communications professionals to connect, share and discover.

Jose Papa, Managing Director of Cannes Lions was delighted to announce that “the findings from this year’s report, which provides the definitive barometer for the most inspiring and creative work in the world. Together with the eight-day Festival in June, we’re pleased to deliver invaluable insights and thought-provoking content to drive business growth”.

The Global Creativity Report identifies the themes and trends that run at the heart of branded communications and is a spectacular exhibition of award-winning work, highlighting the world’s most creative cities and countries, agencies and networks. The results from Cannes Lions, Lions Health, Lions Innovation and the new Lions Entertainment are incorporated.

The results have recorded the rise of Asia Pacific through the city ranks, seeing Auckland ascending from 19th position in 2015 to an astounding fourth place in 2016. Tokyo followed Auckland and took sixth place, Melbourne ranked at 16th place with Bangkok following behind at 17th and Mumbai at 20th. Sydney, however, has seen a steady decline, falling from eighth place in 2014 to ninth place in 2015 and resting at 13th place in 2016. New York held the throne and remained as the top performing city, with London in second place and Sao Paulo in third.

Samsung, Burger King and Microsoft were in the top three of the client listings, with Samsung rising to first place from second in 2015, Burger King ascending from fifth place in 2015 to securing their second place this year and Microsoft took third place. The results also highlighted the success of emerging markets in 2016 with a number of ‘firsts’. Moldova had first-time entries, El Salvador, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and Croatia had their first Lions and Taiwan took home their first Gold in the Entertainment Lions.

Four South American agencies topped the Innovation Agency of the Year list: Maruri Grey takes second; J.Walter Thompson Costa Rica in fifth; Grey Brazil in eighth; and McCann Lima in 11th position. Three Brazilian agencies join the top rankings for Health Agency of the Year: Havas Life, São Paulo, in sixth position; Triunfo Sudler Brasil, Campinas, in 12th; and McCann Health, São Paulo, in 17th position.

The Global Creativity Report also ranked the top performing creatives, art directors, copywriters, creative directors and directors. Nicolas Hardy from Argentina was crowned as the number one director, a first time for this country while Atul Kattukaran is the first ever Indian director to rank in top 10.
