‘Combining both our styles we offer a really broad range of options and concepts'

How long have you been a Freelancer for?
Chris and I have both been freelancing for around 6 years now. Pretty much since we both finished University, although I now work full time as a freelancer for WeThree Club, whilst Chris is still part time.

Describe your work in one sentence.
An amalgamation of two genders creating a colourful bold explosion via the medium of pen and computer. (Art school enough?)

What's the most important thing you've learnt in your line of work?
The value of your own work and time. It is more precious than you first realise when you start working in this industry.

What attracted you to your chosen field?
Both Chris and I have been creative ever since we can remember. For me it was always a clear path to choose as both my mum and dad were artists. My dad was the local artist in the village I grew up in; people always just assumed I would follow his footsteps. There was never a pressure to do well, like I suppose if you came from a long line of doctors etc., but they were very keen to support me in following my dreams, which was pretty incredible to have. I am so unbelievably lucky to stuck with it and managed to make a career out of drawing!

Tell us about your best project to date.
Well recently I have been working for a company called COOK, who creates incredible ready meals from fresh ingredients. I have been working on illustrated packaging for them and various point of sale materials, it's been very refreshing working for a food company. For Chris I think his favourite would be the Manchester City campaign he worked on. Working alongside Music, we were asked to come up with 'gigposter' like imagery to promote a home game, Chelsea vs. Man City, the images were plastered around the city centre; it was an amazing promotional campaign.

What sets you apart from your competitors?
I think combining both our styles we offer a really broad range of options and concepts, which is pretty handy. It's nice to have both a male and female outlook on the projects, seems a bit weird to say, but when trying to appeal to various markets through our illustration its necessary to take these things into consideration.

If you could work on any project for any company/organisation, what would it be and who would it be for?
This is a tricky question! It is hard to say one particular project; personally I always say I would love to do something for the band Les Savy Fav, as I have a lot of love for them and enjoy a good beard.

What frustrates you the most about your job?
People taking your work for granted. Some people might regard 'drawing' for a living as easy, but although I would not change it for the world, it's bloody hard. Constantly requiring inspiration and creativity it's pretty draining sometimes, especially if you have a creative block! I do wonder what it would be like to have a job that when you are finished at 6pm you can go home and not think about it...maybe I would get bored?

What pearl of wisdom can you offer to someone thinking about starting out as a freelancer?
It is pretty rare for you to just start earning big bucks straight away, don't be put off if you don't get loads of jobs rushing in at once, get yourself out there and do loads of free jobs!! you may feel like you are selling yourself short, but they are what earn you coverage and get your work seen by more and more people, it's so important to do those first jobs. Every job you do could lead to another contact or another job, it's all just word of mouth that gets you known really, so don't ever regard a job as a waste of time as you never know!

If you could have ONE super power, what would it be?
To be able to split in two, so I could get more done.

What can a prospective customer expect from you?
We offer a really friendly, approachable service, but with a highly professional outlook. We love working on new and interesting concepts, trying out different approaches and experimenting.

What's your favourite bit of kit?
My favourite is my 0.4 pilot fine liner. I would be pretty lost without it. Chris loves his big thick sharpies.

** *

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
Both Chris and I absolutely detest celery.

What's your favourite song of all time?
Oh god that's hard. We are both pretty big music lovers, it's always tricky to pin point one particular song as so many relate to a period in your life, a memory. I would say one that we both would regard pretty special to us is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps, as it was our first dance at our wedding.

What is your favourite App?
Currently I am enjoying the Google analytics app. Pretty geeky?

What do you like about Creativepool?
I think Creativepool is a great way to help freelancers get in touch with clients, and for clients to find great freelancers. It always provides useful email updates for current jobs within the industry, which are sometimes tricky to find! The lay out is simple and it's really handy to have your own profile for clients to be able to look at.
