Spotlight - Iain Cox - Illustrator

I don't feel quite right when I haven't got a pen in my hand, my life feels strangely absent of any purpose.

Describe your work in one sentence.
My Illustrations are multi-coloured, squiggly scribbles shaped into recognisable objects on a piece of paper.

What's the most important thing you've learnt in your line of work?
I've realized, in the short amount of time that's lapsed since I left college, not to take my work for granted. You have to keep grabbing the attention of clients. At college you're in a relatively small cocoon. What appears to please tutors and peers won't necessarily stand up to the scrutiny of prospective clients.

What attracted you to your chosen field?
Not to sound too clichéd, but I love drawing. I've always been encouraged, so I've always done it. I don't remember a time when I didn't know what an Illustrator was and knowing that that was what I wanted to do. I don't feel quite right when I haven't got a pen in my hand, my life feels strangely absent of any purpose.

Tell us about your best project to date.
I don't think I can pick one. I have a hell of a lot of fun with whatever I do. As long as I'm creating I'm happy.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
The sheer amount of dedication and passion I bring to what I do. I am a hard worker and I think I'm a good, honest guy to work with. I hate the thought of missing a deadline.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I like to visit castles.

If you could work on any project for any company/organisation, what would it be and who would it be for?
I hope this doesn't sound too modest but I would actually love to have a regular editorial slot in the Guardian newspaper. I think they're brilliant at showcasing and promoting new talent like me. I like short deadlines; they don't give you time to dwell or reflect too much.

What's your favourite bit of kit?
The Pilot V5 pen. Can't beat it.

What frustrates you the most about your job?
I suppose it's the unpredictable nature of it. You've got to keep plugging away, promoting yourself, or you'll end up sinking. I hate tax returns too.

What pearl of wisdom can you offer to someone thinking about starting out in your industry?
Never miss an opportunity to meet new people or experience new things, however insignificant or mundane they may appear to be. You never know what it might lead to. Persevere and try to stick to one thing. If you try juggling to many skills or styles, in my experience, it'll just lead to confusion and frustration.

If you could have ONE super power, what would it be?
I dream about flying a lot so I think it would have to be that. I don't like waking up from those dreams.

What do you like about Creativepool?
It's a great platform to show off your work to a broad spectrum of clients. One integral part of my job is the ability to present good quality, clear examples of my work, and Creative Pool allows me to do this.

What's your favourite song of all time?
Mmmm, tricky. I have so many favourite songs! I think it would have to be Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros.

And finally, what can a prospective customer expect from you?
A consistency in style and ideas and a professional, enthusiastic attitude towards anything that I undertake.
